In response to anger at Pride protestors...

I've seen enough polls on here to know that a heavily large majority of DUers are white. I'm not disparaging white DUers for this but the observation has already been made and I think we need to do some self-examination.

Regardless of our state of racial consciousness, white DUers simply do not have the lived experiences of persons of color. Because of this, it's not our place as white community members to speak over the concerns of persons of color when they challenge us for not properly representing their interests.

I know and respect queer and trans persons of color who have sought greater representation in the pride movement to no avail. They eventually decided it was best to speak up at pride marches and hold the organizers and attendees responsible for this. It is not the place of white, cisgender members of this board or the LGBTQ community to doubt or disparage members of our community who feel they are not being listened to or respected. It is our job to listen and create an inclusive environment where a diverse number of voices are heard. This is always an ongoing process so there is never a point when pride is merely a celebration. It is always a resistance as well. If we do not let members of the resistance speak up, we are abandoning the principles that make our movement a crucial part of the fight for civil rights.

We can never know such a thing with certainty with other LGBTQ advocacy groups either. But I can tell you with certainty that BLM truly does care about elevating the voices of group members and I have know doubt that they made every effort to ensure that their own activists were working for a cause they themselves are impact by.

Getting DU to acknowledge that people of color in the group may have feelings different from theirs is like pulling teeth.

It's 2017 on a Democratic Forum and intersectionality is like a foreign concept. You can be black and gay and have an issue w/ police marching in a pride parade for both of those reasons.

People really need to work harder to check their own assumptions and privileges. I know I shouldn't expect the left to be perfect, but we are not living up to our ideals.

I'd have to look up response to incidents in the past.

I wouldn't want the Log Cabin Republicans marching given their complicity and silence to many abuses by the Republican party in the past and the present.

I wouldn't want Milo, Lucian Wintrich, or Chardwick Moore marching because of their transphobia . https://mic.com/articles/175607/lucian-wintrich-chadwick-moore-mock-transgender-women-at-gay-republican-event#.sRECzxOSn

So it would have to depend on G.O.A.L and it's actions over the years. If they stood by and were silent as an organization over certain incidents, then no I don't think should be allowed to march in uniform. A cursory goggle search for their responses, comes up blank.

That combined with the fact that there is no real evidence I can find of any work they've done against police brutality against persons of color leads me to believe they aren't doing their due diligence.

GOAL has a fairly narrow mission statement that does not make mention of systematic police brutality or policing bias against persons of color. As members of the pride community and police officers, it is their responsibility to ensure that their activism in police department addresses the concerns of pride community members who are regular targets of police brutality.
