That's all they know.
I dated a woman years ago that was a pathological liar. She had a hard time separating reality from her very weir brand of fiction.
So no, i don't think intent or consciousness is required to lie.

(82,849 posts)When caught out, someone who has told an "untruth" says, "Oh, I had bad information. I retract my untruthful statement." When they are caught and instead of correcting or retracting, they push all in, then it's a lie.

If I mistakenly say that I weigh 180 pounds, it is an untruth because I weigh 200 pounds. But it is not a lie since it was merely a mistake on my part, and I had no intent to deceive.
