IMHO, Why the gop keeps winning with losing programs. A personal anecdote.

I’ve recently had an on-going personal crisis involving someone with impaired ability to discern truth, reality and the value of information sources. Those of us on here are constantly shocked that GOP voters vote against their own needs and interests.

Without revealing anything or anyone specific, I just want to share that it was an eye-opening experience. This is a person who owned and ran several large, complicated private businesses and was famous all over town, and is loved and respected. So, this person is known to be quite capable, despite a lack of higher education. He/she is a prime example of someone who would likely fail written tests and intelligence evaluations, but can make wonderful things happen for others on a regular basis.

Even though this person’s politics leaned right for the majority of his/her life, those politics have veered left since Shrub. But, having said that, this person still refuses to accept the opinions of professionals, or even community experts. The phrase, “I don’t believe that” is just routine and arbitrary. Because of my close and constant contact, I can safely deduce that his/her alliances to facts and truths run along with his/her personal emotional preferences, rather than empirical evidence, a.k.a, :“The World According To Me.”

And so I surmise that electoral success depends more on familiarity than anything else: The old, “Who Would You Rather Have A Beer With” adage survives.

And so, if a party fails to serve up candidates who reflect the existing desires of the majority of voters, so long. In other words, you either say what they want to hear, or go home. It matters not if your policies or statements are even rational, or pertain to the functioning of the office, or if they have any chance of succeeding. Voters will demand that you say everything they want to hear, even if it is contradictory, convoluted or impossible. There is no chance to explain how society or economy or governing actually works: It’s totally irrelevant. The details themselves are irrelevant. Don’t ask the voter to reflect, consider, understand or change: Like a baby, voters want to be mindlessly spoon-fed what they’re accustomed to, even if it’s horrendous. Trump knows this. He’s the carney barker who can lure the masses in. “Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies.”

The GOP has experts training their candidates to pander to this lower-brain psychic algae. They will say anything, including, “You don’t need that healthcare, anyway! Just make sure the blacks don’t get a free ride!” and it will get them elected.

I fear the dems won’t win until and unless we lower our game to where these bottom-feeders live. We appeal to their cognitive comprehension, but that will only get you some of the vote. We need a candidate for 2020 who can feel right to the majority: Rather than be right.

'Lakoff’s message is simple, but it is couched in the language of cognitive linguistics and neuroscience. The problem is that political candidates rely on pollsters and PR people, not linguists or neuroscientists. So when Lakoff repeatedly says that “voters don’t vote their self-interest, they vote their values,” progressive politicians continually ignore him. His ideas don’t fit in with their worldview, so they can’t hear him.'

We can reframe our daily struggle as a constant battle to reinforce that we're all on the same team.

And abandoning our sick and our poor is like leaving the wounded on th field of battle.

A good soldier would never say to a fellow soldier in need, "I won't help you, it'll just make you lazy and dependent on me." Or "by not helping you, i'm giving you the freedom to get out of that bear trap or not. Your choice."

Millions of people uninsured for a tax cut for the rich? That's like taking away all the soldiers' helmets to pay for a fancy feast for the generals.
Hey, some soldiers will die, but well-fed and happy generals fight better wars so it's worth it, right??

Add this psychology, and youo've pretty much got a way to make irrational humans more predictable. Would help with foreign diplomacy and marriages.

I know someone who believes in a number of conspiracy theories....so much so, they've rejected snopes as a reliable debunker. They now believe snopes is some left wing conspiracy to keep the left dumbed down of what is really happening. How can one be objective when they refuse to be objective?

They really do want to hear only things that confirm what they want to think. There's no reaching these people and they will not acknowledge a fact until it happens to them. Even then, they will still try to blame liberals or something else for their misfortune.
