Toddlers Staggering Hospital Bill Shows Just Whats At Stake In Obamacare Battle

Toddler’s Staggering Hospital Bill Shows Just What’s At Stake In Obamacare Battle
Alison Chandra says if the Affordable Care Act is repealed, her family may face a devastating choice: bankruptcy or her son’s life.
By Dominique Mosbergen 06/27/2017 07:25 am ET

Two-year-old Ethan Chandra was born with heterotaxy syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that can lead to the malformation or abnormal arrangement of internal organs. His mom, Alison Chandra, told CNN on Sunday that Ethan was born with multiple congenital heart defects, two left lungs and multiple spleens. His liver, gallbladder and stomach are all not in the right place.

The toddler has endured a slew of medical procedures since he was born, including multiple heart operations. On Friday, Chandra shared on Twitter the hospital bill for her son’s most recent surgery ― an open heart procedure.

Thanks to their insurance coverage, the family had to pay $500 for the surgery. The total amount due had been more than $200,000, Chandra said.

And one night in the hospital was $66000, of which Aetna paid $27000. This includes the ER visit but not the surgeon.

Amazingly (to me anyway) one of the most dangerous and complicated portions of the procedure - anesthesia - is one of the lower cost itemized costs at $2,391.00. I would have thought that would be significantly higher than lab blood work (which is at $6,594.00).

No matter how you look at it though, that bill is utterly life destroying for anyone without health insurance and the access to health care should be the central point for us as a nation...not access to health insurance. These costs are astronomical and unsustainable no matter what we do with insurance. Over the next 15-20 years, we are going to see the mass die-off of the Baby Boom generation and an influx of healthcare costs like we have never seen before...and THAT is utterly being ignored as we have a congress hell bent on taking a bad situation and making it even worse...

It's time for congress to have their heads forcibly extracted from their asses. WE have MASSIVE, UNAVOIDABLE and NATION-TESTING events on the very near-term horizon - Baby Boom aging, Drug dependency epidemic, Health Care access and cost crises, Climate Change consequences and more - and these idiots in Washington, especially the GOP idiot robots , are doing exactly squat to address ANY OF THEM!!!!

I am not kidding when I say that we are literally MONTHS away from having to decide if the United States of America is even worth saving as a theory, and then decide how to do so...or simply split this nation into two halves and allow the GOP and their fundie idiots to go off on their own and become Haiti to the left-leaning Dominican Republic...without federal funding assistance that flows from the more blue states like CA / IL / NY / MA to the more red ones like Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and WVa, those areas would almost immediately become third-world level hell holes...their damn close already, a tiny push would easily do the trick.

There are irreconcilable differences emerging in our republic...we cannot survive and abide with 40% of the population willing to do anything simply to piss off the liberal and left-leaning portion of the population (irregardless of consequence or self-inflicted harm that doing so produces). We cannot survive with some people accepting rational thought, the scientific method and modernity and the rest trying to drag us back to a failed theocratic concept that was NEVER in the IDEA of "America" in the first place. We cannot survive in a nation where many simply refuse to acknowledge health care as a right, not a privilege of position, heredity or luck.

This melting pot is coming to a boil...it may be time to jettison some of the pot to save the rest...
