Why the Russia investigation could be even bigger than you think

By Paul Waldman June 28 at 1:31 PM

Whenever he comments on special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of the Russia scandal, President Trump seems consumed with refuting the accusation of “collusion” between himself or his campaign and the Russian government (if you can call “Nuh-uh, fake news!” a refutation). But while it would certainly be shocking to learn that Trump personally conspired with Vladimir Putin to coordinate the Russians’ efforts to undermine Hillary Clinton in 2016, collusion is only one sliver of the problem he could face.

There’s a good chance that there were many kinds of wrongdoing going on around Trump, and if there were, Mueller and his team will probably find them. Which is why this investigation could become much bigger than most people realize.

Over his career — before he ran for president but continuing once his campaign was underway — Trump managed to assemble around himself a group of shady characters worthy of the most notorious mob boss, and that has continued into his presidency. Today we learn this, courtesy of Tom Hamburger and Rosalind Helderman:

<< A consulting firm led by Paul Manafort, who chaired Donald Trump’s presidential campaign for several months last year, retroactively filed forms Tuesday showing that his firm received $17.1 million over two years from a political party that dominated Ukraine before its leader fled to Russia in 2014. >>

You may recall that last year a ledger emerged in Ukraine showing huge cash payments from the party to Manafort. At the time he claimed it was a fabrication, but payments noted in the ledger were later confirmed to have taken place. And now — just as former national security adviser Michael Flynn did with regard to his work for Turkey — Manafort is retroactively registering as a foreign agent, which is the kind of thing you do when your lawyer tells you that you’re in serious trouble.

So much of the Repug party is implicated in this scheme, it's totally enormous and unprecedented. There's no constitutional remedy for one party being in thrall to a different country, to being traitors to their own country. How do we fix this when the SCOTUS has these partisan asses who put their ideology over the country?

McTurtle taking $2.5 million from a Ukrainian with ties to Putin
Ryan getting a million from Drumpf (after money laundering from Russia?)
Sessions lying about 3 meetings with Russians
Drumpf encouraging Russia to hack Hillary,
Drumpf saying Russia didn't hack the election and refusing to acknowledge what 17 US spy agencies have said - Russia hacked our election
Drumpf has not asked anyone at FBI or CIA to look into this, hasn't mentioned it ever to them except asking them to say he wasn't personally involved.
Drumpf has never asked how we can prevent Russia from hacking the next election, shown 0 interest and neither has the head of the FBI

Why would we expect any other kind of behavior in his political campaign? No telling what things will be uncovered when the investigators start turning over rocks to see what is under them! I suppose that tRump figured since he had largely gotten away with his shenanigans all those years that he could just do more of the same in DC. Only on bigger scale.

That rat came with a reputation and it was anything but sterling. So why wouldn't people look at him askance when he won on Nov. 8th when no one, including him, really expected him to win?? This is going to get real interesting, real fast. So hang on tight. Could be a bumpy ride. Especially for the Orange Menace.

Despite what the Trumpster and his acolytes say, I agree that this investigation appears to have legs and encompasses a multilayered approach. The team Mueller has assembled points toward a much bigger hornets' nest than collusion and obstruction though I suspect those charges will be the entry point. Mueller has brought on lawyers with expertise in money-laundering, bank fraud, terrorism and cyber-security, as well as criminal investigators. The man is not fooling around. I've also read that NY's AG Eric Schneiderman has been putting together a case against Trump and his various financial dealings with mob-related characters and Russian oligarchs.

DT has a reason to be obsessed with the Russian probe. He's in deep trouble. Of his own making, I might add.

Most people really can't comprehend the size, complexity and duration of the criminality at work here. I wonder if one of the things that's delaying proceedings is Mueller having to make a choice of which of the myriad of possible charges to deal with first.

One of the few people who has enough flexibility to get her mind around the scope of this thing is Louise M. And the fact that she groks it - and talks about it rather flamboyantly - causes people to dismiss her as hysterical or cray. She's neither, IMO, but she is very dangerous to the flat six-legged people who are trying to hide under the baseboards. She has a nasty habit of turning on the lights. As a result she is subjected to assault from all points of the compass. IMNSHO.

Here's a C-span video of a computer science expert testifying before Senate Intel. Makes it pretty clear it's vulnerable to much more than just Russians tampering:

J. Alex Halderman: Our voting structure is vulnerable to sabotage, even to attacks that can change votes Computer science professor whose research focuses on computer security and privacy has (with colleagues) studied voting machines and tested and verified that they can be hacked by foreign actors. "The key lesson from 2016 is that these threats are real." What needs to happen: * Upgrade old voting machines to new ones that have optical character recognition to recognize votes made on paper ballots. * Use those paper backups to verify the ballot count is accurate. * Harden voting systems against sabotage by applying cybersecurity best practices. We can upgrade our election infrastructure by 2018.

Trump condos worth $250 million pose potential conflict
Nick Penzenstadler , Steve Reilly and John Kelly , USA TODAY
Published 7:05 p.m. ET April 20, 2017 | Updated 11:20 p.m. ET April 20, 2017

LAS VEGAS — President Trump’s companies own more than 400 condo units and home lots whose sale could steer millions of dollars to Trump, a USA TODAY investigation has found.

USA TODAY spent four months cataloging every property Trump's companies own across the country. Reporters found that Trump’s companies are sitting on at least $250 million of individual properties in the USA alone. Property records show Trump’s trust and his companies own at least 422 luxury condos and penthouses from New York City to Las Vegas, 12 mansion lots on bluffs overlooking his golf course on the Pacific Ocean and dozens more smaller pieces of real estate. The properties range in value from about $200,000 to $35 million each.

<SNIP>

“Anyone seeking to influence the president could set up an anonymous company and purchase his property,” said Heather Lowe, director of government affairs at Global Financial Integrity, a D.C.-based group aimed at curbing illicit financial transactions. “It’s a big black box, and the system is failing as a check for conflicts of interest.”

Since Election Day, records show Trump companies have sold at least 14 luxury condos and home-building lots for about $23 million. Half were sold to limited liability companies. No names were listed in deeds, obscuring buyers’ identities. Since launching his White House bid, Trump’s companies have sold at least 58 units nationwide for about $90 million. Almost half of those sold to LLCs.

The Background

President Donald Trump still has not taken the necessary steps to distance himself from his businesses while in office. In accordance with a plan that he and one of his lawyers, Sheri Dillon, laid out at a press conference on January 11, Trump has filed paperwork to remove himself from the day-to-day operation of his eponymous organization. However, numerous ethics experts have voiced strenuous objections to the plan, which they say does very little to resolve the issue: As long as Trump continues to profit from his business empire—which he does whether or not he is nominally in charge—they say, the possibility that outside actors will attempt to affect his policies by plumping up his pocketbook will remain very much in play.

Several of Trump’s critics have moved forward with legal action. The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, filed a lawsuit alleging that Trump’s business holdings violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which makes it illegal for government officials to “accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.” CREW’s bipartisan legal team includes, among others, Norm Eisen and Richard Painter, who served as ethics lawyers under Presidents Obama and George W. Bush, respectively; Laurence Tribe, a constitutional law professor at Harvard University; and Zephyr Teachout, a professor at Fordham University (and former congressional candidate) who is considered an authority on the Emoluments Clause. All have been vocally critical of Trump’s continued refusal to sell off his business, and are now taking their case to court to argue that several of Trump’s businesses present avenues by which foreign governments could seek to influence the president by, for example, booking stays at one of his hotels or renting space at one of his properties. Additionally, the lawsuit seeks to force Trump to reveal his tax returns, something every president has done since Gerald Ford but which Trump has refused to do, significantly limiting the public’s ability to understand the president’s finances. When asked about the lawsuit, Trump described it as “totally without merit.” Eisen was quick to respond on Twitter, offering to “debate Trump (or his chosen champion) on the merits of our case anytime,” making it clear that CREW intends to continue to pursue its case. (CREW has also filed a separate complaint to the General Services Administration arguing that Trump has violated the lease on his Washington, D.C. hotel, which states that “no ... elected official of the Government of the United States … shall be admitted to any share or part of this Lease, or to any benefit that may arise therefrom.”)

Though CREW is the first group to bring a lawsuit against President Trump, it may soon have company. According to The New York Times, Anthony Romero, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, has said that his organization is looking for a plaintiff to sue Trump for violating the Emoluments Clause, although with a different claim to legal standing: While CREW intends to demonstrate that the group itself has suffered financial harm because the need to focus on the Emoluments Clause has diverted its resources away from other worthy causes, the ACLU is hoping to find a hotel or bed-and-breakfast owner that can prove he or she has lost business to one of Trump’s hotels during his presidency.

CREW’s lawsuit is just the latest development in what promises to be a continuing saga regarding Trump’s many conflicts of interest that began almost as soon as he won the presidency. Along with his unprecedented wealth, Trump brings to the office unique and gravely concerning entanglements that, whether he recognizes their effects or not, threaten to undermine his decision-making as president. The plan Trump and Dillon announced on January 11 would do very little to resolve the conflicts: It places control of his assets in the hands of his two adult sons and a longtime associate of their father’s with what so far amounts to a pinky-swear assurance that, despite their proximity to the president, they will not discuss any aspect of the business with him. On top of that, the plan supposedly would terminate several of the Trump Organization’s pending deals and place a ban on new foreign deals, two conditions undermined by the announcement that the organization would be moving forward with expanding its golf course in Aberdeen, Scotland.

What I think this means:not what I was told which is the tweet. Prosecutors neither need nor want Manafort's cooperation. They have Flynn

And mountains-decades of evidence against Manafort. His work over the years is reprehensible...resulted in people being killed and unimaginable poverty.. if he walks there is no justice.. They want him punished. He's a dead man walking. He isn't walking. He's going away for decades.
