I'm starting to actually think Turtle is trying to sink any healthcare repeal/replace, at least until after the midterms. At least.
First of all, it was the height of bad strategy to try to do this in a week or two.
Second, no one was whipping votes. The whole attempt seemed half hearted.
Now he sends the singularly most detested member of the Senate to try to negotiate with other Senators. As is well known, NOBODY likes Ted Cruz.
Overarching all of this is a bill that is just plain shitty. It polls as low as 12%. TWELVE percent.
Town halls are going on now and Senators are running away from them. Invitation only events, online private events, no events, question-prohibited events are the new norm. When citizens are allowed to speak, the sentiment is strongly against this bill.
I think Turtle smells blood in the water, and its HIS. He's a horrible man, but he ain't stoopit. He KNOWS this bill can kill his majority. I think he's trying to kill it before it kills him.

(118,659 posts)compromise healthcare bill as a threat to the freedom caucus, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and the rest of the lunatic right wing Congress people, to vote for the bill as it is or McConnell will cook up something with democrats.

(111,261 posts)which worked really well for them until Asshole got into office and they knew a repeal would be signed. They've also been facing their angry constituents and the reality of fighting against the ACA for 7 years without coming up with a single thing to take its place has sunk in to the folks back home in Podunk. So they tried to tack together a bunch of unfriendly ideas from libertarian ideologues, like health care savings accounts and ending the reform that covered the sick and not just the healthy and found out none of it would hang together and all of it would leave the folks back home without insurance.
Since they have a distinct aversion to tar and feathers, the support has simply not been there. I think they will kick the can down the road at least two years while the House continues to strut and crow that they did their jobs.
