I follow Dan Rather on my Facebook page. He's 85 years old. And yet he writes in the most beautiful, almost prose-like manner with a rich, vivid vocabulary. And when he's interviewed in person, he's the same way while speaking.
Bill Clinton is 70 years old. Hillary Clinton is 69 years old. Jimmy Carter is 92 years old. None of them have shown any major cognitive decline in their communications skills from what I've seen.
Yes, Donald Trump is 71 years old and it's possible for people of that age to start to suffer from cognitive decline or dementia.
But without any definitive diagnosis, has anyone ever thought that maybe that's not what's going on with Donald Trump? That what we see with him is not because he's going senile, but rather just because he's a) not very smart and b) hampered by his lifelong personality disorder issues?

I have an ex-son-in-law who was also an expert, but he only lied when he needed to get his ass out of trouble. I see that in Trump, as well. Trump doesn't want the job any longer and is putting on an act to wiggle himself out of it.
He'd be very happy if we "fired" him.

(53,815 posts)Another word for it in trump's case is lazy. Other presidents, when they want to get a bill passed they get out and use their bully pulpit like O did for the ACA. He campaigned for in the states, on TV, all over the place.
trump just wakes up, rolls over in bed and tweets. That all the effort he wants to expend. No press conferences, nothing.
Oh, and he loves to be driven around in golf carts while others stroll.

(17,865 posts)I was thinking this morning while getting ready for work whether, if the money laundering et al, would lead to Trump dying in prison. I don't think it will, but it should if he did actually violate the law.

(7,433 posts)when he's publicly charged with impeachable offenses. That's inevitable. It's going to happen. There's already a sealed indictment and Mueller's waiting for the right moment for its release.
Mueller's dead serious about his assignment and he's going for the throat of the Trump/Russia coup. It won't be pretty. Flynn is singing, Manafort is singing, the electronic surveillance data is overwhelming, and Rudy Guiliani is begging to sing (he's also going to be hit with indictments), but Mueller is refusing his request. Mueller's refusal to take Guiliani's confession means that he doesn't need Rudy's squealing. That ought to say volumes about Mueller's mountain of evidence.

"Mueller's refusal to take Guiliani's confession means that he doesn't need Rudy's squealing."
Is he being investigated? Did he ask for immunity? Is he offering to talk?

(73,581 posts)I would not use comparisons to other elders for this, as both genetics and life-style make this an individual thing. However, I think you are correct overall, especially per the personality disorder. I'd add that he also is experiencing the effects of being tired out, without access to the long periods of rest that he had before taking office.

(26,286 posts)He has always been a selfish, vile misanthrope and I suspect will be one until he draws his last breath. If he is starting to suffer from declining cognitive abilities (and I suspect he is) that only makes him more dangerous.

(11,742 posts)They are just attempts at explaining his erratic behavior. Ultimately Trump is still responsible for his decisions and his statements, unless he is found to be incompetent by the appropriately licensed medical or psychological professionals and that competence is adjudicated by a court. If it came to that, then we could attribute the behaviors to that condition, but then he would be removed from office, so problem solved. Then we would have to go back and ask the people in his family and administration, along with members of his party, why they would continue to promote a candidate and president that had no capacity to do the job. Of course everyone would deny and obfuscate, but it would be a fascinating process, and it would weaken the Republican party. Trump would go down in history, like he wanted, but not in the way he wanted.
Your other explanations are just as likely. I think Trump, without his money and lawyers who have been willing to do his bidding, would be in jail as a small time crook. I think that he is a sociopath, and sociopaths are usually unstable and unsuccessful in life because of their emotional instability. Trump has been able to get away with this problem because of his wealth.
