“Presidential elections will take place next March and Putin is widely expected to stand and win another six-year term.”

The idea is that if he ever left power he doesn't trust that the next guy will support or protect him. A guy like Putin has made a lot of enemies. The gist of it was he was afraid of ending up in prison or worse.
