Years ago I was in a troop in N.W. PA and one of the members was my
next door neighbor and his dad was the county DA and his uncle was Governor
of PA, Ray Shafer. Ray was a great guy, we would see him all the time,
and he was a republican too.
Governor Shafer would sometimes be at Boy Scout functions and he would have
never dreamed of bringing partisan politics into a scout function.
The little I could stomach of Trump at the National Jamboree made me sick.
BTW I still use things I learned in the Scouts almost every day too. Things like
tying a bowline on a bight, tying a square knot, how to build a fire, and bitching
about the weather will not change anything so just move on and do what needs to be
done.

(28,270 posts)Former scout from about 45 years ago or so. (damn I'm old LOL)
Trump continues his Shit All Over America tour and takes a giant dump on the BSA this stop.
The scouts were booing Hillary and former scout President Obama though. They share the blame as well.

(70,589 posts).... about how politics had no place in scouting. Having scouts boo somebody
@ a national jamboree was shameful. It was 100% against the scout pledge.
A Scout is:
Trustworthy,
Loyal,
Helpful,
Friendly,
Courteous,
Kind,
Obedient,
Cheerful,
Thrifty,
Brave,
Clean,
and Reverent.

(28,270 posts)Someone else said on one of these threads that a country's scouting organization must be politically neutral to be a part of worldwide scouting.
If so the USA scouts are in trouble IMO.

(32,777 posts)Don't blame the kids, Trump is absolutely shameless. He has no right to turn a Boy Scout Jamboree into a Trump rally.
It's because he can't find a non-judgmental, adoring audience anywhere else now.
The BSA organization shouldn't have let this happen. They owe the parents and kids a very big apology and promise that it will never happen again. Parents are absolutely livid as they should be. They're posting their reactions on the Facebook page and I'm sure they're calling the BSA office in Texas.

(20,878 posts)In my day, it was for the rich kids. Those uniforms etc. cost a lot of money. My brother got to be a Boy Scout but what about the Girl Scouts?
Answer: Uniform is too expensive and you are a girl so forget it! That is what I was told.
The right winger across the street has a son in it and so does this other idiot winger across the way. Whatever they teach, one thing lacking is respect for others I've noted over the years.
Boy Scouts ...
Reserved for males only as the Girl Scouts sell their cookies.

(14,543 posts)When I was a leader, I did not require a uniform. I did require sashes. That is why when I handed out patches to 1st timers they came already sewn on a sash. If the girls stayed in scouting I would get them a shirt with cookie money sales. I also started a can recycling program. every few months I would take the cans and sell them at the recycling place.
the district never had a problem with our girls not in full uniform. They knew these girls were from poor rural areas.

(14,543 posts)They used the uniform as an excuse. Where I went out of my way to get girls to join and stay involved. I would love to know where they are now.
