We'll never fully recover from this Presidency.

At some point, we'll have a Democratic President who can rebuild the agencies that Trump so cavalierly decimated. And if that Democratic President is anything like the last one, he or she will also be able to rebuild some level of trust in the office, as well as our relations around the globe. And if and when we get a Democratic Congress, we may even be able to reverse any harmful policies enacted into law.

That said, we'll never be able to wipe away the stain of Trump himself. He really has debased the office in a way that will never full go away.

And Republicans will keep enabling him - all for a stupid tax cut. In the words of Trump himself, SAD!

Our government has been sliding into the abyss since the Kennedy assassination. When Democrats are in charge they winch it back a little. When the Republicans take over, the hard won gains are crushed under their jackboots.

I think we've had it as a sustainable democracy.

If all we're left with is a stain, I'll breathe a sigh of relief.

I keep thinking of Samson and the Philistines.

I have no doubt that all of us are seen as Philistines, and it doesn't seem much of a stretch when I imagine the guy with the football thinking of himself as Samson. And you know how that story went.

17. Samson's death
Tue Jul 25, 2017, 09:41 PM
Jul 2017

Samson wasn't very smart and that's a trait he shares with Trump. I mean, Delilah asked him several times what was the secret of his strength. Each time he told her a different reason and she'd try to overcome him. That he didn't see the nefarious pattern is practically humorous.

Once he was captured and blinded, he was brought into the temple by the Philistines.

And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” And he bent with all his might so that the house fell on the lords and all the people who were in it... (Judges 16:30)

I'm not sure we have an apt analogy in this tale.

On the other hand, Samson was incredibly strong and that's a trait Trump has never known. He is the weakest president in my nearly 6 decades of life. When he sends out his tweets, I'm chagrined that the president acts like a teenaged "mean girl." I'm also amused that he's such a jackass. Most importantly, however, it demonstrates how ineffectual he is. His incompetence is unlike anything I've ever seen.

I knew a number of people who didn't like Trump and would have rather had a different Republican win the primary. But when push came to shove they still voted for Trump because they wanted their taxes lowered. I think these upscale Republicans don't get enough flak for their support for Trump. They were willing to throw the country under the bus for a tax cut.

Trump is just the culmination of decades of Republicans making greed and selfishness a virtue and pretty much deciding to do whatever it takes to win and change America into a country that is becoming nastier and meaner every day. Right-wing talk radio heads like Rush Limbaugh have been using crass appeals to sexism and racism for a long time so even Trump's vulgar style is not totally new although it is new for a presidential candidate and that is probably where he will leave his greatest legacy. Politics is becoming more of a cesspit and a lot of decent people don't want to have anything to do with politics anymore. It furthers the state of corrosive cynicism and lack of trust in our institutions that leads people to not bother paying attention or even voting.

We're *still* fighting the American Civil War. It's a cold war for now, but more than a few nutcases on the right would love to blast away.

The issues are the same: Should the United States maintain an aristocracy that holds most of wealth; and should people of color be a perpetual underclass in service to it? And as time passes, that "underclass" becomes an increasingly larger entity. And should that "underclass" be allowed access to healthcare? Jobs? Affordable education? A fair shake? The 1% (like slave owners) say no, that *they* are the victims of an overreaching federal government. Meanwhile, the homeless choke our storefronts and alleys, corporations destroy the planet, and we are involved in endless warfare abroad.

This war can still be lost, and it's not looking good right now.

“We'll never fully recover from this Presidency.”

No, we won’t.

There’ll be a Democratic president and Congress at some point, we can only hope sooner rather than later – but the irreparable damage will have been done to the judiciary, a Supreme Court populated with hateful, reactionary Trump appointees, where the states will once again be able to compel a woman to give birth against her will, deny same-sex couples access to marriage, and disadvantage immigrants, and there won’t be anything a Democratic president and Congress can do about it.

Since Obama was elected president, I've seen racism openly expressed like I've never seen it before. I'm 60 & grew up in a rural area & what people feel okay saying today, on TV, and in the public space - they would have been shamed back when I was a kid. No, we didn't get over the Civil War. It's been reignited. I blame McCain for bringing Palin to the national stage - she started a lot of this & the GOP condoned it with their silence.

34. Not just tax cuts, but unlimited amounts of money from billionaires into their campaigns
Tue Jul 25, 2017, 10:49 PM
Jul 2017

The Kochs, Mercers and other billionaires own and control the Republican Party lock, stock, and barrel. That is who the GOP works exclusively for - no one else. Citizens United has ensured that unlimited amounts of dark money can flow from these billionaires through many channels to Republican Party and campaign coffers. And that money is NOT for nothing. The billionaires EXPECT SOMETHING IN RETURN. They expect to literally control the entire US gov't and to have every policy and law (esp tax laws) written exclusively in their favor such that most of America gets or has nothing and the billionaires and corporations GET. IT. ALL. And I mean EVERY LAST CENT.

Case in point:
