...I've felt this ever since his election. He simply cannot function as an "ordinary" Republican--or indeed, an ordinary anything. He'll go full Perot in 2020--*even if he's impeached and removed from office*. He'll run then to "vindicate" himself, and attack the GOP far more ruthlessly than any Dem would dare to do. And if he is still President, he'll have declared himself an Independent long before 2020, running to represent the "people" as a whole against the parties and "special interests". This might actually be to the country's advantage, since in positioning himself, he could actually make deals with the Dems and the small bloc of sane Republicans to get some rational policies passed. If the Dems treat him with respect--yes, it's stomach-turning, but necessary--we might just get some business done with him.

(1,257 posts)That is, fantasizing that he did run as an independent.
It would fracture the Repug/right wing vote. They certainly are marked now....
You would have/hope to imagine that this would bode well for the Democratic candidate.

(15,951 posts)But if you think that Trump is going to align himself with "sane" republicans and Democrats then you're kidding yourself.

(25,253 posts)If he runs as an independent (if he lasts that long) he'll split the Repug vote. He'll pare off the deplorables. The Repugs will get the remainder of what's left to the Repug Party at that time and the Dems will win hands down.

(84 posts)Thought this was a serious post. Sorry. At best utter is satire and at worst democrat baiting. What gave you away was saying trump running in 2020 might be too our benefit and that he could work with both sides of dems respect him. Now I know you are just a trump liver messing with us. At no time shoulder democrats ever work with trump. So far the only thing dems and pubs have done together is limit trumps power.

(22,976 posts)The idea that "he could actually make deals with the Dems" is never going to happen. Zero chance.
You might as well wish that #45 "comes to his senses," apologizes to the entire world, and consciously decides to be a decent person who puts himself last, and who only wishes to serve all American people with the fairness, dignity and respect they deserve...
Not. Gonna. Happen.

Trump should govern as an independent because that's what he really is.
Trump is not really a republican and he's never been a conservative.
Instead of continuing the hate on Trump maybe Democrats should try to forge an alliance with him against conservatives. I could see a Trump, Democrat, moderate Republican coalition forming. I think he would be open to it. It'd be a way to influence legislation and supreme court picks. The other way of just hating on him just keeps him in control of the far right.
The supreme court is what matters most and to try to at least get him to replace Kennedy with another moderate Kenney type judge, and the only way to have any chance of doing that is to stop the hate and try to influence him. Ginsburg could retire too.
I doubt he would run again though because running as an independent means he would probably lose. But I could see him creating a coalition and then not running again. The same kind of thing happened with Schwarzenegger. He ran as a conservative and then changed back to being more moderate so he wouldn't be an outcast in Hollywood or with the media.
