Former President Obama and his advisers are reportedly urging former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) to run for president in 2020, according to Politico Magazine.
Obama, a personal friend of Patrick, has privately encouraged him to consider a 2020 bid, the magazine said. Meanwhile, Valerie Jarrett, a close adviser to the former president, said that Patrick being president is what "my heart desires."
David Axelrod, former chief strategist for Obama, has reportedly spoken with Patrick about a potential run, pointing out electoral advantages that Patrick might have such as high turnout in his native New England and in Southern black communities.
"If you were to poll 100 notable Obama alumni, the only two people who would win that 2020 straw poll right now are [Joe] Biden and Patrick," a former senior White House aide said. Another former top Obama official told Politico Magazine that "the center of gravity would really shift in his direction in Obamaworld if he were to decide to run."

(397 posts)He's a conservative Democrat who works for Bain Capital. So hell f*cking no to Deval Patrick. As a progressive I would take Booker or Harris in a heartbeat over him. So no "purist" thing here. He would seriously be a terrible choice.

(5,170 posts)Obama put more effort into the TPP than anything else in his presidency. And the effort to help Wall St win on trade continues.
Yay!

(52,164 posts)He spent most of the first year on health care. He also spend a vast amount of effort on stimulating the economy. He supported the TPP but the notion he spent more effort on it than anything else is absurd on its face.

(52,164 posts)and that Republican is still popular gives me pause. Maybe he spent political capital doing awesome things which redounded to the benefit of the state but he may have been a crap governor.

(58,936 posts)2. Martha Coakley was a terrible nominee.
3. The Gov is a moderate openly opposed to Trump.
4. Massachusetts elects Republican governors quite often.
