I can understand why I am seeing so many bearded men around. Men of all ages are wearing beards and it probably is some kind of trend. I use an electric shaver as much as I can and supplement with a cheaper blade as much as possible. But shaving blades must be profitable by several thousand per cent.
How much does it cost to make one blade? And why is Gillette and Schick gouging so much? I have seen some prices over $30 for just a few blades.

Wash the body and the hair(same soap-I'm a guy) lather up the face and 3 minutes of pleasant break in the morning. After I am done use my natural sponge to wash my face.
That said, I do carry one of the expensive plastic things on vacation. Just easier. But I always jones for my manly shave when I get home.
Been with the wife for 30 years and when I switched 10 years ago she said it sexy having a guy use a real razor. And I am an overweight middle aged guy!

But you're right, there was a time when people found it worthwhile to hone DE blades on glass but they are cheaper now. I wouldn't do it at this point. The most expensive Japanese blades i have are still only 40 cents each.

If you like putting soap in the bottom of a mug to load it, you can buy some of the Italian soft soaps by the kilo. It should last a couple years of excellent shaves.

My razor blades cost about 12 cents each. I buy 100 packs for $12 on Amazon prime. The razor cost about $30 but it will outlast me if I take care of it.
Your local hippie food store has great shaving creams that are cheaper, better, and last longer than canned garbage they sell at the drugstore. I also get great artisan shave soaps from my local farmers market
Synthetic shave brushes are actually cheaper than badger and boar if you don't want to face animal oppression every morning.
Or if you are open to stropping and honing and never buy another blade ever again, try a straight razor

(24,324 posts)Decades and decades ago I shaved like that.. as did my father.
I've gotten into the habit of using the triple plus supper duper fancy schmatnzy razors..and power=propelled shaving cream.. only shave about once every 2-3 days...too lazy..
maybe I'll switch back..
Docreed2003
(16,866 posts)I switched to old school wet shaving with a brush and safety razor about five years ago, and I'll never go back to the newer, pricey multiblades. Here's a few reasons:
1). Cost. Multiblades are too damn expensive and their cheaper varieties were tearing my skin up. There is an upfront cost to safety razors and wet shaving but if you're smart about it, that cost can be minimized. I buy a pack of blades maybe, and I mean maybe, once every six months, and they are dirt cheap.
2). Skin Health. So, it takes some getting used to the change. There's a learning curve involved and you can't just rush it like with an electric razor or multiblades. Once you get the technique down, it's a breeze and shaving is my favorite morning ritual. Additionally, I no longer have any issues with skin break outs or razor bumps, and my shave is closer than I ever had with a multiblade
The only downside...I travel every few months with my job and I like to use a carry-on. You can't take safety blades through security. So you'll have to either suffer with a bic or buy some blades when you arrive where your going.
I could rant on and on about my love of the safety blade. Check it out for yourself.

(16,866 posts)Prior to that, I was quite literally, using granddad's razor, found it in a box of things I had kept over the years. It served its purpose well and was a nice connection.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)Until I bought my new German one I was using my dads. Mother gave it to me when he died 23 years ago and I had for year before breaking it out. Do not know your age but my dad was born in 33. I will say dad's has a tricky screw handle on the bottom which opened the top to remove the blade. Much more convenient than my German one where I have to unscrew, remove and dissemble the entire head. But Dad's was only about 3 inches long and light...I could not use the angle and weight of the razor to do the shaving resulting in the occasional cut.
IronLionZion
(45,463 posts)if you do it upside down: keep the top cap on your countertop, then place the blade on it, then the bottom plate, then screw the handle on. It's done in seconds and you won't risk cutting yourself.
They do also make modern safety razors where you twist the handle to open doors at the top but they're not as good as the old classic Gillettes. Parker is one brand that makes these types.
I prefer the 3 piece.
Docreed2003
(16,866 posts)I have to disassemble my German razor like you described and my "antique" has the same mechanism as your dad's razor.
I'm 39. My friends initially thought I was somewhat weird when I first made the switch, but several have now switched to wet shaving as well.
What shave soap do you use? I try to play around with that because no two are exactly the same.

(32,028 posts)The reason blades go bad is that they are made out of steel and the combination of air and water causes them to rust. Most people just put their razor down someplace so the air and water go to work. If you store them in baby oil or something similar there is no air or water residue. Thus no rust. Thus they last longer sometimes than the razor assembly itself. I go about 6 months between blades and I have heavy facial growth.
GulfCoast66

(11,031 posts)$9 for a 4 pack of blades every other month (I think they have cheaper options as well, but I like the multi-blade razors). The blades are comparable to the expensive Gillette ones, they're mailed to my door, and when I get enough of a backlog (which happens about every 6 months) I just turn it off for a while. They're other grooming products are pretty good as well.

(2,559 posts)... looked sort of like a wall pencil sharpener. I assume it was in the attic because it couldn't duplicate the factory edge, but still it probably was valued by a frugal owner at some point. Maybe the sharpening surfaces inside wore out.
I've had a full beard for decades now. I do shave the neck and cheeks daily, but one dispo plastic razor lasts for weeks. I put a mirror in the shower and shave there, so I don't have to deal with shaving cream.. a little soap or shampoo works just fine.
Of course everyone knows the razor blade marketing story: the companies gave away the holders, or sold them at cost. They knew they made their money from repeat business, as the blades would have to be replaced regularly. Modern disposable razors have dispensed with having to buy the holder - it's made so cheaply that it can be given away with each blade.
It doesn't matter to me if the blades are single, double, triple or whatever. However, I've found the single and double blades are better for putting a nice edge on a beard. You get three or more, and it's harder to tell where it's starting to cut.
