(58,670 posts)hopefully sooner than later. The Trump/Putin axis is trying to keep it viable as long as possible because the arctic oil will be pretty valueless in 15-20 years. That's why they're trying to get to it now. We'll still need coal and oil (unfortunately) for plastics and pharma, but it's use as fuel is gonna start declining as people switch to electric cars and energy transfers to renewables.
The evironmenal problems of the shale oil in Canada compound the issue that it is one of the most expensive sources of oil. Piping it 2000 miles to export/refine it in Texas is fast losing its cost effectiveness.
