Amy Klobucher,Maria Cantwell, and colleagues sponsor bill to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices

http://sanjuanislander.com/news-articles/government-news/federal/25407/cantwell-introduces-legislation-to-unleash-the-bargaining-power-of-seniors-for-a-better-deal-on-prescription-drug-costs

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) has introduced legislation to unleash the bargaining power of seniors for a better deal on prescription drug costs. The legislation would allow for Medicare to negotiate the best possible price of prescription drugs to cut costs for nearly 41 million seniors enrolled in Medicare Part D. Current law only allows for bargaining by pharmaceutical companies and bans Medicare from doing so.

“Our seniors should not have to choose between lifesaving medicine and other vital necessities,” said Senator Cantwell. “I’m proud to join my colleagues in introducing this legislation, which allows Medicare to leverage its purchasing power to lower prescription drug prices for seniors. When you buy in bulk, you should get a discount.”

The legislation would allow the Secretary of Health and Human Services to directly negotiate with drug companies for price discounts in the Medicare Prescription Drug Program, eliminating the “non-interference” clause that expressly bans Medicare from negotiating for the best possible prices. By harnessing the bargaining power of nearly 41 million seniors, Medicare could negotiate bigger discounts and thus lower prices for seniors.

It's only reasonable (and happens to be one of the benefits Federal employees and retirees have, 'our' plans have negotiated prescription and other prices for ? a long time.)

Medicare Part D was a huge giveaway to drug companies.

Doubtful the Repubs will let it go anywhere, but it is good to get it out there.

My doctor told me that Kaiser charges 3 times as much for a drug I get on Medicare than the patients of a VA doctor friend of his are charged for the same drug. That is because the VA is permitted to negotiate the price while Medicare is not. My share happens to be zero under Medicare but on my monthly Kaiser statement it shows the cost as $12,500, the amount Medicare pays. So too the VA patients pay very little but the VA only has to pay the drug company less than $4000.

George W Bush needed votes in Florida for 2004 so he passed a better Medicare drug benefit. But to keep pharmacist lobbyists from bribing elected officials to vote it down he agreed to prohibit Medicare from negotiating on the price of drugs. The chairman of the relevant committee in the House who got the law written this way, Billy Tauzin, then left congress to become the CEO of PHARMA, the drug company lobby group. Mr Tauzin's pay jumped from $120,000 per year, I think, to $2 million per year. And God knows he was worth every one of those millions thousands of times over.
