Keep it locked and loaded (as far as information goes), but just stay calm. You can always show him to the door if he refuses to hear your side, but you should NEVER feel like you can't express your opinion. Especially if you are on your own property!

Why, after at least 6 separate congressional investigations, nothing like that was found. Was it because the rethugs conducting the investigations were so embarrassingly incompetent? Or was it because there was nothing to find?

Them's the choices.

Well maybe not a mental illness, more like a brain infection that attacks the very specific area of the brain that rationalizes thought. Anyone can be infected with this virus, and it will turn the most seemingly normal people into flat out animals. It's insane to watch people get bit by this bug. I've seen friends get bit by this virus - once seemingly normal people get bit, and they turn into full on Infowars level conspiracy theorists.

My dad has this friend of his from college. Guy is a bioengineer with 3 degrees and a PhD. Owns a business worth millions. One of the smartest guys I've ever known. Except when it comes to politics. He's a batshit crazy, off the wall, fundamentalist Christian conspiracy theorist who hates Hillary Clinton, and thinks that they're being persecuted because people aren't worshipping baby Jesus in public enough. How does the GOP attract that kind of mindset? I want to know!

Two actual examples.

1. Friend of mine who says he isn't a right winger...but totally is. "Illegal aliens cause our insurance rates to go up". I told him, no they don't, and if we were legally allowed to charge by income, race, etc. white guys like us would be paying more, I work in the insurance industry. He refused to believe that. So I told him this, note he lives in a "red-neck" type of area... "how many people do you know would say, hold my beer and watch this while operating a vehicle"...that shut him up.

2. A neighbor said that people on welfare cause our insurance rates to go up. Which surprised me considering, she and my wife volunteer at a food bank/distribution for the poor. So, again, with my insurance background "no they don't". She looked at me and said "how?". One, they almost never make a claim, their vehicle is usually so old and dinged up, the insurance company would call it a total loss pay them a grand and walk away. They have to find another vehicle in decent condition and it won't be a grand. Next, most welfare recipients don't have a vehicle and take public transportation. What drives up the rates is the guy or girl in the 30k+ plus car talking on their phone and plow into the person in front of them because they weren't paying attention. Haven't hear a word about that since.

If corruption is such a big issue to some on the right, then why aren't they up in arms about the obvious, deep and longstanding corruption of 45, particularly by the Russians? Typical logic failure from a Republican.

I too have a neighbor who is neck deep in the right wing media bullshit, and all that that entails. And yet, you can see in how he treats the people around him, people with whom he actually comes face to face, that his politics and his morals are at complete odds with one another. This is what I'm talking about when I say that by far most Republicans are actually decent, though tragically misinformed, people.

The problem is the fact that Republicans have very well figured out that all politics is NOT local, and in fact it can be very successfully used to manipulate people's perceptions about groups and interests that are specifically not local. Not a lot of Muslims in rural America, so it's a lot easier to manipulate the perception of Muslims in those areas, because most people who live in those areas don't actually know any Muslims, so they lack the benefit of personal experience that runs contrary to the narrative they are fed. Try peddling that shit in Metro DC where you're going to encounter people of all faiths, races and orientations just walking to the neighborhood coffee shop and it's not going to fly with the vast majority, because since it's about something that is local, people know better from their own experience.

It's that divide, people who actually have the experience to make it clear when they're being fed a line of bullshit versus people who only have know what they are fed by the media they consume, that really defines politics in this country. One of the things that struck me about my neighbor is the degree to which his ignorance is the result of him not having internet, which means that the only points of view he is ever going to see or hear are those peddled by someone who owns a radio or television broadcast system.

We too often take for granted the ease with which those of us capable of making it to this website are able to ascertain whether what's being said is true or complete bullshit.
