Man frees great horned owl tangled in Duchesne soccer net

This great horned owl got tangled in a soccer net at Duchesne Academy last week, and a staff member cut it loose with scissors.

By Michael O’Connor / World-Herald staff writer Aug 7, 2017 Updated 29 min ago

Mike Kotulak found something unexpected when he stepped up to a soccer net at Duchesne Academy on a recent morning: a great horned owl.

The big bird had gotten tangled in the net, probably the night before when swooping across the field hunting for a meal.

Kotulak, the Omaha school’s facilities and grounds director, carefully cut the bird loose with scissors, but the owl didn’t fly away.

“He just laid there,’’ he said.
