Reflections on President* Trump's latest comments about North Korea.
By Charles P. Pierce
Aug 8, 2017
LINCOLN, NEBRASKASince I am presently located in proximity to god alone knows how many nuclear missiles, I am forced to take very seriously the latest evidence that the president* of the United States has left whatever hinges he ever had far, far behind.
This is flat fcking crazy. From ABC News:
They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. - Trump on North Korea threats https://t.co/ZhcnVU4zVQ pic.twitter.com/03xLnOihwl
Colin Jones (@colinjones) August 8, 2017
This is the way Saddam Hussein used to talk, or the way some 12-year old gamer crows after reaching Level 900 of Nuclear Zombies In Heat. To hear the president* of the United States spout off like this has the potential to have half the world hiding in the basement. For me, I'm going to walk carefully around here for a couple of days. You can never tell what might pop out of the ground.
We will be lucky to live through this.

(21,506 posts)It's possible but it would be foolish despite this clown in the white house. When nukes are launched supposedly there is something like 6 minutes to react. You can't be trying to run people down in those six minutes.

(23,147 posts)One of drumpf's generals was on and he said the process is designed to move with lightening speed and if Drumpf pushes that button, the nukes will go, there's no one reviewing his orders, they just implement them.

(7,968 posts)Their plan is to use war as the 2nd resort once "sanctions" appear to fail. That will probably happen and we probably will go to war. It could go nuclear.
The real seriousness of the situation globally (assuming you don't live on the Korean peninsula where it will be plenty serious) is the question of how China will react. That will be critical.
How sane are the Chinese leaders? i know more sane than the Orange Clown, that's a given, but all and all how solid are they?

(90,773 posts)Lawrence Wilkerson also points out the Kim dynasty has been and is sane. Their goals and worldview are not ours.
The only insane leader in this whole equation is Donald Trump. Lucky us.
pangaia
(24,324 posts)is no more sane than trump or Kim, or putin, or most republicans. and.. perhaps most/many human beings.
It is just a matter of degree.
One of the ways RUMI used the term "insane" referred to being totally and fully in love... with God....which demands conscious awareness.
This meaning of insane is just the opposite, lack of self-awareness, lack of any consciousness. Sleep.
That is my view.

(7,968 posts)It would still be irrational for China escalate the situation if the US attacks. They might, I just don't know. I would argue that they are culturally closer to North Korea than we are to Mexico. A better analogy might be the China attacking Canada. How would the US react? Mutual defense treaties aside, I would recommend sober caution rather than bellicose military action.
Again, I'm not giving an opinion. I am very much against this aggressive posturing. I'm trying to game out in my mind what would really happen but my opinion remains unwavering. Trump's statements yesterday were dangerous and reckless.

(4,033 posts)Sen. John McCain said Tuesday that President Trump should not threaten North Korea with "fire and fury" unless he is prepared to carry out those threats.
"The great leaders I've seen don't threaten unless they're ready to act, and I'm not sure President Trump is ready to act," McCain told the Arizona radio station KTAR. "I take exception to the president's comments because you got to be sure you can do what you say you're going to do."
wiggs
(7,817 posts)a reasoned strategy that's not insane or incompetent or that creates worse unintended consequences. McCain just wants action and it sounds like he's goading the WH.
The point that congresspeople should be making over and over screaming at the tops of their lungs is that they/we have no faith that the WH has its act together enough to juggle the thousand moving parts involved in a world crisis in order to come up with the best path forward. Congress allowing the WH to bumble through an international incident with millions of lives at stake is not OK...is my point.

"President Trump has basically drawn a red line saying he'll never allow North Korea to have an ICBM missile that can hit America with a nuclear weapon on top, he's not going to let that happen, he's not going to contain the threat, he's going to stop the threat," Graham told "CBS This Morning" on Thursday.
Speaking from Clemson, South Carolina, the Republican said two scenarios in which the U.S. would act with force would be if "they attack Guam or some other American interest or our allies, or if they try to keep developing an ICBM."
He added that he feels the U.S. will head toward war with the North "unless the world can stop North Korea", saying Mr. Trump will "pick homeland defense over regional stability and he has to."
