... strategy, or will begin to do do, too much. It would be a last-ditch gamble to give the DPRK a military victory under Un to maintain control, because he can't manufacture the same "victories" his dad and granddad could. He would have to have a victory that was verifiable even by the citizens listening illegally to Chinese/South Korean/Russian tv/radio.

Yes, there would be retaliation, but he'd be gambling on us not really wanting to piss off every other surrounding nation with fallout.

I think he could get a "good enough victory" with conventional weapons, though. Which would be smarter.

NK has a lot of geographic hostages. they might be inclined to attack one to show they're serious. if so, the US military base in Guam would be a very juicy target.

OTOH, there is the matter of retaliation to consider, and whether they really want to continue escalating the nastiness.
