"off the table"? If so, will the last person to leave the Democratic Party please turn out the lights?

(6,085 posts)Not saying it would have been good to campaign on doing it, but explicitly taking it off the table was a lame move.

(13,218 posts)The Democratic politicians are always doing things like this that make me think they've got a special deal with the republiCANTs? In the election 2000 I thought that about the Senate, since none of them would support the congressmen who were seeking investigations into the vote counts.

(7,715 posts)IMHO, there is a huge difference between W's stupidity and the Buffoon's treachery. The legal standard for impeachment is the commission of "high crimes or misdemeanors". That phrase seems simple, but the meaning is always debated.
If there is evidence of treason or obstruction of justice in the Buffoon's case, I would think that would be a no brainer for a Democratic House to impeach.
As Gerald Ford famously said in 1970 when leading the failed attempt to impeach Supreme Court Justice William Douglas, an impeachable offense is whatever the majority of the House says it is. It was deeply hypocritical that a few years later, when debating Nixon's impeachment in 1974, the House Judiciary Committee Republicans insisted an impeachable offense had to be a "real" crime or misdemeanor.
If we get back the Congress (specifically the House) and the House doesn't impeach if there is evidence of the Buffoon's collusion, obstruction etc, that would be an outrage to me. By contrast, W was a disaster of another league, but I would view his transgressions as incompetence not amounting to impeachable offense. Regarding W, Pelosi was probably concerned about the precedent of impeaching a President for his/her decision to wage a war, perhaps fearing that could subsequently be used against a Democratic president.
Putting the legal talk aside, the comment the Buffoon made about being happy about what is happening to the US government employees in Russia is shocking and disgusting. I cannot believe that any government official in the US could say this.

(269,157 posts)and violations of the Geneva Convention were impeachable offenses?
The Democratic Party played way too nice after that 2000 election was stolen and don't forget what went down in Ohio in 2004. Both set the stage for this fucking mess.

(11,744 posts)He and his administration intentionally lied to the American people about threats from Iraq in order to invade the country. They lied to Congress, which is the same thing that got Bill Clinton impeached, except Bill was lying about an extra marital affair that affected his marriage and Monica Lewinsky. Bush's lies to Congress cost the US at least a trillion dollars and 5000 American lives, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives.

(2,074 posts)Another day, another jab at Nancy Pelosi.
There is ground for impeachment of Trump - probably obstruction of justice; certainly conflict of interest with his business ties; and even possibly collusion with a foreign power, depending on what Mueller finds. It was different in the case of Dymbya.

(10,624 posts)Did you think we would've got that with Bush?
Personally, I think Pelosi made the right call with regard to GWB.
Trump is another story. If Mueller uncovers sufficient evidence, the Democrats would be right to pursue impeachment. (Despite the fact that it would be unlikely to succeed given the number of Republicans in the Senate.)

(21,786 posts)to get 15 to 20 Republican senators to vote for impeachment. A two-thirds vote is required. Any attempt to impeach Bush would've been a pointless waste of time because the votes were never there to convict. I'm always amazed at how many seemingly rational adults are incapable of understanding simple political realities.

I really don't appreciate the trolls on DU who continually attempt to tear down the Democratic Party.
We need to be vigilant against the alt.left divisionists who are making war on our party.
There were no grounds for impeaching GW Bush. Being unwise is not a crime. Attempting to impeach him would be the move of demagogues, not Democrats.
Trump could be a different story. If Mueller finds a crime (not unlikely) I don't think Trump will have enough support from Republicans to save himself. He has alienated too many in the GOP to have political capital.
Heck, just yesterday Trump suggested that Mitch McConnell might have to go as Senate Majority leader. Not the way to win friends.
I think the likelihood is that Trump will be removed from office. And Nancy Pelosi becomes Speaker.
