Virginia governor orders National Guard on standby ahead of 'alt-right' rallyBy JULIA JACOBO Aug 11, 2017, 7:46 PM ET
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has placed the National Guard on standby in preparation for a rally in Charlottesville on Saturday, where at least 1,000 nationalists are expected to attend.
The Unite the Right rally is scheduled to take place Saturday at McIntire Park in Charlottesville, the city said on its website. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said in a statement that the event could be the "largest white supremacist gathering in a decade."
McAuliffe said in a statement that while he believes the majority of the rally's participants will express their views "safely and respectfully," he believes that some attendees may be violent.

(111,261 posts)I think participants will be expected to have them already. That August sun is hot and humidity there is high.

(28,270 posts)But sadly I will suffer whatever fate the traitorous republicans and their apostate heretical religious reich zombies have in store for America.
But if the rest of the world thinks they will be safe from the most lethal military in the world run by a madman and his fascist party for long, they are nuts too.

(51,593 posts)incite violence like the cops in San Diego did during the Impeachment Rally when the alt-right Proud Boys tried very hard to get fights started. I am a pacifist and even I wanted to smack them stupid.

(90,767 posts)the idea that racists can express their hate "respectfully" is ludicrous.
By definition, there is nothing respectful about racism or the expression of it.
I get he means most aren't planning to physically attack people - but not all attacks are physical and everything coming out of the mouth of a racist at a rally to promote racism is a form of verbal assault. Unless someone thinks calling people the N-word can be done respectfully - and I hope not. Insert any other racist phrase or saying - nothing respectful about those either.
Again, for the cheap seats, I get what he meant - doesn't change the fact that the word use struck a sour note with me.
I hope all goes well as can be expected when a group of hate-filled morons gather in one place. I don't for a second believe the contortionist view that racists gather to peacefully spout their hate. When a group of people get together to spout hate, they are doing it to rile people up. It's not merely to exercise a right. Sure, they have a right to express their views but they don't gather to celebrate that right - they gather to be able to loudly proclaim their racism. To be able to use hate speech with their voices amplified through a microphone and media coverage.
And then there's this from the AP -
As if white nationalism isn't racism. It most definitely is. As if the two are somehow separate from each other - they aren't - regardless of the bullshit attempts by white nationalists to claim otherwise. From time to time some of them will claim they aren't racists, they are just defending their own kind.
I've got no use for racists. None. No tolerance for them either.
