After I explained that my son was now also my ward, the conversation relaxed and I told him, don't worry, my family and my husband's family has had many members in various branches of the Armed Forces. After I enumerated a few and that they were veterans, he heartily agreed that we deserved to skip a generation of military service. He was nice to chat with. Marine Corps.

My husband had a great-great who served on the Union side of the Civil War. Lots of WWII, Korean War and Vietnam vets, and several in the younger generations who have served or are serving.
