I'm surprised the driver that plowed into the crowd hasn't been named

The license plate was clearly visible and easily read. License plates are public record and I would imagine someone could easily find it. I think you can plug that number in and for a small fee, get the information right online.

How has the identity remained unknown with the license plate number available? Get a name and find out what his FB page is filled with.

might not have been the driver. The car could have been borrowed or stolen, or the license plates stolen. If a name is identified on the basis of DMV records they might not have been involved at all, and there is a danger of unfairly involving an innocent person. Let's wait until the police have identified the person in custody.

I guess that's why nothing has been released. I was surprised it wasn't with the plate so visible.

I've mostly just been reading some here and there online and tuning in to cable news sporadically, but it seems so unusual for the "news" to not be showing pictures or footage of the apprehension of the suspect. No talk, really at all of the "who" just that it's happened.

I knew someone would find it. I think even if you go to Whitepages.com to try and find a phone number for someone you know, it links to those websites that will pull public records for a price. I've never used them, but knew it could be done.

I guess it just says who owns the car but not definitively that this person was driving it. I guess we'll know soon enough.

The car is registered to 20-year-old James Alex Fields of Ohio, according to vehicle registration records reviewed by The Washington Post. Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail Superintendent Martin Kumer told The Post that a man with the same name and age was booked Saturday on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, failure to stop for an accident involving a death, and hit and run. Kumer said Fields is being held without bail.

You can request it but these are the people who can access the records.

License plate searches are permitted with appropriate documentation for the following entities: vehicle owner, law
enforcement, insurance companies, attorney and investigative agencies

I read in your wikipedia link that one stalker used a private investigator to get the address. So, here in Colorado at least, it can still be obtained that way.

I looked to see if license plates are public record and came across this website. I put in my license plate number and state and it found it but I would need to pay $2.95 to get the file. Not sure if it will actually provide it because I don't want to pay for it. But I'm sure people do.

From my own personal experience, one could simply go to any RMV (this was in MA), request that info
without providing any ID, and get it within minutes; they also had a reading room of sorts with volumes
of records printed on the old dot matrix paper where one could look up the info on their own.

It was also no problem walking into any police station, give them the plate number and some BS
excuse (hit and run in a parking lot), and the person at the desk would hand it to you.

Granted, this was 35 years ago, but it's wise and unnecessary that that info should be easily accessible.
