Heather Heyer's mom is a stronger person than I would...

...be able to be.

I saw a brief clip of her earlier today, saying that she was not going to fall into hate because that was not how she had raised her daughter, and it was not what Heather's life was about.

If either of my sons had died 2 days ago, for any reason, I would not have even picked myself up off the floor yet, let alone been able to speak on camera about them.

If someone had taken their lives by a volitional act, I would hate that person forever.

for how we should all be dealing with hate at all levels.

Hate breeds violence. We should all be rejecting it, starting with ourselves.

That said, while I would not "hate" in her situation, I would struggle mightily to forgive, or to be okay with any flavor of "justice" that included the possibility of parole.

To be honest, if that were my situation, I don't know how focused on the perp or the rest of the world would be. I'd be struggling to find a reason to move or open my eyes or get out of bed or even breathe. How to finally get up and function in the world. I'd be about grief, not hate.
