Austin Statesman (may be paywalled)Organizers say a rally and march set to take place in downtown Austin at the beginning of September will promote true Confederate heritage.
A Facebook event page hosted by the Texas Confederate Militia says the Dixie Freedom Rally, scheduled for Sept. 2 at Woolridge Square, 900 Guadalupe Street, will feature live music, guest speakers and a march to the Capitol and Confederate monuments nearby.
You can bring any Confederate or U.S. Flag. It is open carry and also concealed handguns plus longrifles are permitted. Just go by the State Law, the page said. No racism tolerated or will be removed. (Lets) show everyone true Southern Hospitality.
So far, 21 Facebook users said they planned to attend and another 152 were interested in attending.
Let's hope this gets cancelled -

Bravado like that is not helpful.
Remember, those who are proudly displaying "Confederate Heritage" probably have a very shallow relationship with the South. Most of the Neo-Nazi's in the news seem to be from California, Ohio and other States far from the South East United States.
I have studied the Civil War - the other point to remember is that while the politicians and monied elite (the Koch's of the era) were defending the Economic model of Slavery as essential to their pocket books, the common man who fought and died on both sides were doing it for far different reasons. The stances these "modern" Confederates take today would have been foreign to the Southern man of old.
There was never a Confederate Nationality - it was always a mixture of States in the South - a lose group whose selfishness thankfully interfered with what should have been their common focus. Many men on both sides were swept up fighting for their State and home. To them they were Virginians and Georgians first, then Americans. Conscription and Bounties were common to fill up the ranks. The regiments which fought were the 1st Massachusetts, 7th Virginia, with only a few official US Federal troops (and those mostly on the Western Frontier).
What you are seeing is a modern invention from the 1960's featuring a mismatch of iconography - an astroturf - to justify bigotry and white supremacism. But this version is not "Southern" - it's just as common to see a Confederate Flag in Indiana and N. Dakota as Florida.
The Civil War is over - let the dead sleep. Their world is no more - the divisions are not the North vs. South, but a fight between Fascists and Neo Nazis vs those who believe in Equality and Democracy

(100,079 posts)Once you get outside of Los Angeles and San Jose, it's total Trump country. I've noticed this a lot lately on several road trips to the bay area. The thing is we forget that because we live in the big cities. But it's the rural, small towns where these bigots are being born and bred. And lack of education with emphasis on home schooling and I that's what is leading to this rise of white supremacism that we're seeing right now.
The other thing I think is fueling a lot of this rage is that parents just don't give a shit what their kids do online. I noticed how many people who attended that rally on the other side were of the young and easily impressionable age - a lot of 19 - 25 year olds. I really wonder where they're getting this hate from?

(26,403 posts)There is an abstraction - a distance - which kids are missing. I have very early memories of "segregated" water coolers and bathrooms and have talked with Holocaust survivors.
I'm afraid this is missing to kids who have a hard time separating this reality from a fake online one. Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation[1] where symbols and abstraction serve as a replacement for reality. These idiots lack sufficient education either from school and/or from parents to give the ability between things as presented on the Internet. They lack the ability to process information and have no curiosity or awareness to seek out what they don't know.

(26,403 posts)Hope it is cancelled - I believe this is glorifying the Confederacy which means glorifying the defense of Slavery which was the political reason for its existence.
I will also avoid downtown Sept 2nd as well.
