Tampa Confederate Statue May Not Be Relocated

By STEVE NEWBORN • 16 HOURS AGO

The Confederate statue at the county courthouse in downtown Tampa may not be moving after all. Hillsborough County Commissioners are now asking the public to pay for it.

Just weeks after the board agreed to relocate the statue to a private cemetery in Brandon, commissioners say it won't happen unless the public raises roughly $140,000 in the next 30 days.

That's the remainder of the cost needed to move the 116-year-old statue.

So far, less than a tenth of that amount has been raised in a Go Fund Me account ...

They're refusing to act to avoid going on record as approving the removal of an objectionable Confederate Statue. They think the face less danger from their white supremacist loving base by shirking their responsibility than they would if they just did the right thing and ordered the removal.

The money is just a ruse. If the statue was unstable and posed a threat to public safety (which it does in any event) they would truck it off to the scrappers in a heartbeat.

TAMPA — Hillsborough County commissioners gave an ultimatum Wednesday to people who want to move a Confederate monument from downtown Tampa: Raise the money yourselves or it stays. They had 30 days.

It took 24 hours.
