And my spouse groaned: it passes through Trump country! Except for Oregon I tried to be calm.
Doubt it will change their anti science stand.
Oh well

(47,534 posts)Some of my friends from SoCal are heading to Portland.
And, I am sure, you know all about how to view and how to photograph.
Here, in the Twin Cities, is going to be cloudy and rain. So much for our 80% eclipse

(11,491 posts)and suppose to get 80+ %. But on coast here it is foggy almost every morning so unless a rare day of morning sunshine it will just get dark for awhile.

(149,699 posts)Not sure what the rest of my family is doing, but I'm going to drive from Bend (we rented a house there for all 6 of us!) to Madras, which is about 40 miles north of there.
Madras is almost on the center line of the zone of totality. I am worried about the traffic going the same direction I will be, but I have planned it so that I will get there.
I'm sorry you won't be able to see it.

(3,194 posts)We were still planning on going to Ankeny Wildlife Reserve which is near Salem. Is that not likely to be far enough inland? We are worried about traffic going east on Sunday night, and then coming back to Portland on Monday, since we have a 4:00 train to Seattle.

(149,699 posts)Madras is about 40 miles from Bend, and normally that drive takes an hour or maybe less. The Oregon Dep't. of Transportation estimates that, with all the folks traveling to Madras, the ride might take NINE HOURS.
I've decided to leave Bend the night before around 7 pm at the latest, and drive all night if need be to get to Madras in time for the eclipse. I'd like to get a little sleep in there too!
Not sure of the exact location of your wildlife reserve, but Salem is not very far inland. You might check weather.com for weather updates for that location.
Here's a link to a great website for the whole state which will give you traffic updates: https://tripcheck.com/Pages/RCMap.asp
Best of luck to you!

(7,817 posts)flying to portland saturday morning. Have car rented at airport (fingers crossed) and will drive to rented cabin on Mt Hood for two nights. Getting up well before dawn Monday to drive to Madras which normally should be an hour away.
Super excited! But realize things could go sideways to try to get to and from Madras so we will have a flexible attitude and enjoy ourselves no matter what!
From the direction we are approaching Madras, would be happy to make it to a nice overlook in Warm Springs area, just west of Madras.

(60,010 posts)I posted an email about it to a friend in the area up there:
"Cars were backed up for 14 miles from the Ochoco Reservoir near Prineville heading east on Highway 26.
The backup was blamed on the 35,000 people with tickets to an eclipse festival at Big Summit Prairie."
and some gas stations are out of gas.
this is now, 5 days before the event.
