'You Lost, Get Over It': Phoenix Confederate Monument Decorated With '2ND Place' Banner

'You Lost, Get Over It': Phoenix Confederate Monument Decorated With '2ND Place' Banner
"This was a bipartisan effort," said Rebecca McHood.
Author: Hayden Packwood , KPNX Published: 08/16/17

PHOENIX - The Confederate monument that stands at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, just outside the Arizona state Capitol, looked a little different than it usually does Tuesday evening.

In addition to its memorializing of Arizona Confederate soldiers and its erectors, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the statue got a few new decorations.

At the top, a ribbon hung with the words, "You lost, get over it," and at the bottom, the monuments message "A nation that forgets its past has no future" had been covered with a "2nd Place," "Participant" banner.

was erected looong after the Civil War. In fact, it was erected in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement, in order to make a statement about AZ's stand on that social issue.

I posted a nice graph of when the monuments and schools were names, and it shows 2 periods of time,

the Jim Crow era and the civil rights era. Confederate named schools were especially popular during the time of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

Phoenix and Tucson would have had a total of about 10,000 residents at that time, with approximately half migrating from Mexico.

The only battle in AZ was at Picacho Pass, see link, about 120 confederates, mostly Texans battled the Union supporters, mostly Californians.

I was born in AZ, lived there through College, and had no idea that this plague or plaque even existed.

Arizona and New Mexico weren't separate territories at the time, and the Confederate-supporting faction wanted to make Arizona (which was then the southern parts of present-day Arizona and New Mexico) part of the Confederacy. There was a Civil War battle fought at Glorietta Pass in what's now New Mexico which put an end to that - in 1862.

Losing a war is not in and of itself shameful. It is that they fought THIS WAR at all. They waged war against the US in an effort to preserve slavery, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans in the process.

I've been thinking of doing something like this on a confederate monument near where I live. They should all be festooned with such mockery.

"Aww, you really tried!"
"Participant."
"Better luck next time!"
"Good sport."
"Best loser."
"We're #2!"
Etc.
