(269,157 posts)incompetent aka fucking crazy

<snip>
Bob Corker is no Donald Trump hater. Which makes what the Tennessee Republican senator said Thursday about the President all the more powerful.
"The President has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful," Corker told reporters following a speech in Chattanooga.
Later, he sounded a similar note: "We should hope that (Trump) aspires that he does some self-reflection, that he does what is necessary to demonstrate stability, to demonstrate competence, to demonstrate that he understands the character of our nation and works daily to bring out the best of the people in our nation."
Stability. Competence. Stability. Competence.
Words matter in politics. Corker, who was the mayor of Chattanooga before being elected to the Senate in 2006, knows that. Which is why his repeated emphasis on Trump's "stability" and "competence" matter.
Corker is clearly hinting at the possibility that Trump is not simply misguided in some of his policies and pronouncements -- but that he may be fundamentally unfit for the office that he currently holds.
Doubt it? Ask yourself what the opposite of stable and competent is. It's unstable and incompetent. Corker doesn't go all the way there but he is absolutely leading people to ask those questions by choosing the words he did.
In doing so, Corker is raising the stakes in the conversation Republicans are currently having about what to do about Trump in the wake of his controversial comments about the motivations of the protesters in Charlottesville over the weekend.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) is openly questioning Trump's mental stability, competence, and character, as Republicans are starting to come forward with serious criticisms of their own president.

(26,289 posts)I just wonder if there is a 'tipping point' person. Unfortunately, there's nobody like Barry Goldwater, who would be strong enough to confront trump* and tell him it's in the interest of the country that he step down.
And even if there was, I seriously doubt that trump* gives a damn about what's in the interest of the country. Just what's in the interest of his company.

(62,448 posts)I expect if there is a movement to remove him it will turn into THE constitutional crisis of all time.
He won't go quietly. He has way too much illegal stuff to hide and needs the cover of the presidency to keep it hidden.
I am frankly scared this will happen. I expect some in this country will take up arms and go into rampages on his behalf.

(16,448 posts)I don't follow Tennessee politics but Corker seems like the kind of guy who could get elected in perpetuity in that state no matter who is president.
Which begs for the question is this a case of a Republican actually having a crisis of conscience that has nothing to do with their next campaign? If so that's a pretty big breakthrough.

(10,437 posts)trump insults commonsense and corker has tired of it, unfortunately corker can lose 40% of his base voters which makes this senate seat vulnerable

(16,975 posts)Haven't read it yet, but it's starting to look like this is a big development. It will give cover for others to be "patriots" when admitting Trump is just not fit to serve in the Oval Office.

Republican voters in New Hampshire are more likely to pick Ohio Gov. John Kasich over President Trump if the two were facing each other today in the 2020 presidential primary, according to a new poll out Tuesday.
The New Hampshire Poll, conducted by the American Research Group, found that 52% of likely GOP primary voters would pick Kasich, while 40% would choose Trump. Another 8% were undecided.
Likely voters also favored Kasich (41%) over Vice President Pence (27%) if the primary was today, with 32% saying they were undecided.
The results were released less than a week after leaks revealed Trump said he had won New Hampshire because it was a "drug-infested den" during a January conversation with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

(1,020 posts)I called his office yesterday (yes he is one of my senators). I asked the person that answered if he had made a statement about Trump's news conference yet. She said he had not. I gave her ear full politely as I could then asked her what the senator action would be to get the white supremacist and Nazi sympathizers out of the White house. I specifically mentioned Gorka, Bannon, Miller, and the President himself.
I also talked about the Justice Department asking for the information of all the people that had visited an anti-Trump website, she seemed genially appalled by that. I said that is what banana republics and dictators do the squash dissent. She said she would pass my comments on the Corker.
So I am going to take credit. Hopefully one of many that called about Trump and how unqualified he is.
