Republicans have courted racists for years. Why are they cringing now?

By Leonard Pitts, Jr.

It is important to look beyond the riot.

Yes, last week’s violent demonstration by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, culminating in the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, made for a carnival of obscenity as sickening as it was riveting. But the thing is, it did not spring from nowhere.

And while your first instinct — unlike the moral imbecile in the White House — is condemnation, that’s the easy part. What you have to remember is that this is said to have been the largest public gathering of white supremacists in many years. There is, it seems, an unmistakable new energy on the extreme right.

So you might want to ask yourself: Why?

It’s easy to blame the aforementioned moral imbecile, but truth is, he didn’t create this energy. It created him.

Matter of fact, I don't know that ANY President has apologized for neo-Nazis. The KKK definitely...look at Woodrow Wilson's career. Mr. Birth of a Nation. But neo-Nazis! Nah, idk that that's ever happened. Republicans like to hide their racism, Trump is exposing the entire party.

It wasn't older people who scream at Fox News 24/7, it was young males under 25 years old! The fact that young people have embraced Hitler is an absolutely terrifying sign of things to come.

This is going to get in the way of cutting taxes on the wealthy. So dreary to have to explain the party's affinity for Nazis when what they really want to be doing is shoveling the Treasury into the overstuffed pockets of the overrich.

in exchange for some coded messages as long as they took a back seat to corporate interests like tax cuts and deregulation.

Finally they realize, too late, that when you dance with the devil, eventually the devil calls the tune.
