To keep silent is to jeopardize the reputation of the company. C.E.O.s are testing their moral voices more forcefully than ever. The Moral Voice of Corporate America
By DAVID GELLESAUG. 19, 2017
The nation has split into political tribes. The culture wars are back, waged over transgender rights and immigration. White nationalists are on the march. Amid this turbulence, a surprising group of Americans is testing its moral voice more forcefully than ever: C.E.O.s.
After Nazi-saluting white supremacists rioted in Charlottesville, Va., and President Trump dithered in his response, a chorus of business leaders rose up this past week to condemn hate groups and espouse tolerance and inclusion. And as lawmakers in Texas tried to restrict the rights of transgender people to use public bathrooms, corporate executives joined activists to kill the bill.
These and other actions are part of a broad recasting of the voice of business in the nations political and social dialogue, a transformation that has gained momentum in recent years as the country has engaged in fraught debates over everything from climate change to health care.
In recent days, after the Charlottesville bloodshed, the chief executive of General Motors, Mary T. Barra, called on people to come together as a country and reinforce values and ideals that unite us tolerance, inclusion and diversity.

(733 posts)CEOs due diligence on Trumps administration: buy in; sound investment, we can control this guy.
The talk about Trump and the business community avoids mentioning the events that breached the wall between CEOs and politics long before their public repudiation of Trumps racism . These CEOs due diligence in joining Trumps administration consisted of backing his most wild claims to be their champion and rationalizing his obvious ignorance of all buiness issues.
Heres how he did it.
False promises
In his campaign Trump boasted about his ability and desire to support the business community and enact business friendly legislation and regulation. CEOs believed Trump and turned a blind eye to his ignorance of trade and other business issues. They were willing to go along with him in hopes that he would actually be pro-business.
Fear
Out of the gate, however, President Trump began his attack on the business community . He attacked Carrier and put the CEOs on notice that he would unlevel the playing field by picking winners and losers based on their ability to accept his agenda. Companies began lying or accepting Trumps lies about when they had made decisions about increasing jobs. Trumps message to the business community was I can drop your stock price in a tweet.
Co-opting the CEOs
By creating councils and advisory boards, Trump lured the CEOs into tacitly approving his administration by giving them hopes that they could actually have a say in Trumps agenda. These councils were just petri dishes for Trump to winnow out the CEOs that would not be loyal to him no matter what he did. Those who thrive in the toxic environment would become members of Trump s Future Oligarchs of America club.
These are the same tactics that Trump is using with the Republicans.
