People turn out across country to send a message against hate

ASSOCIATED PRESS AUGUST 19, 2017

AUSTIN, Texas — Antiracism rallies were held Saturday in cities across the country, including Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and New Orleans, in response to the deadly violence in Virginia last weekend.

Hundreds of people gathered for a morning rally at the Austin City Hall, holding signs in support of racial equality. Organizers of the Rally Against White Supremacy estimated that 1,200 people attended, The Austin American-Statesman reported.

Several hundred people rallied Saturday near a lifeguard tower in Laguna Beach, Calif., south of Los Angeles.

Mayor Toni Iselman told the crowd that ‘‘Laguna Beach doesn’t tolerate diversity — we embrace diversity.’’
