Has anyone ever seen a non-white person flying the Stars and Bars?

That was my question to a Facebook friend who kept insisting it only represented Southern, not white, pride. He has one on the bumper of his truck.

I never have. Have you?

If the Confederate flag was really just about southern heritage, then it would be equally admired by blacks and whites. It clearly and obviously is not.

in the bed if his truck. The confederate flag was much bigger than his American flag. That should get him slapped by about anyone that cares about either flag.

Maybe when it doesn't cost $1000 for a root canal and crown, then maybe we can joke about people unfortunate enough to suffer poor oral health.

"A toothbrush and toothpaste cost $5.00," someone will immediately and laughingly recite.

And that's true and terrific, but how exactly does a toothbrush fix a broken tooth, or an abscess resulting from a poorly-seated filling?

Let's all laugh at the woman who got a mastectomy! She must be a stupid, ignorant racist!

Let's chuckle at the guy who lost three fingers in an accident! What a racist dumbass!

It's exactly the same thing, and it's a fucked up thing to make fun of.

If it's an issue over which people have little or no control, then don't mock them for it.

If it's an issue of non-hurtful behavior inherent in their culture or place of origin, them don't mock them for it.

If it's something that doesn't affect you except aesthetically, then don't mock them for it.

As to the current example, these people are celebrating racism in a way that is directly hurtful to many millions of people. Whether they have deliberately chosen it (as is the case of my idiot fellow Pennsylvanians waving their Confederate participation trophies), or if it's a part of their culture that is unmistakably hurtful (as is the case for southerners waving their Confederate participation trophies), then it's fair game for mockery.

If it's something inherent in the person (ethnicity, stature, gender identity) or if it's something over which they have minimal control (their upbringing, their income level, health) then mocking them for it is not greatly consistent with progressive ideals.

YMMV, of course.

In some of the more rural parts of SC, driving from the coast to the upstate. They're usually on houses but one is actually on a pole in the front yard. When I first saw this, about 20 years ago, I was shocked to see who was sitting on the front porch and/or going to or from a car and the front door. But then I saw some on TV, interviewed in Columbia before the flag came down after the church shooting in Charleston. It's bizarre but they're out there.

At times the black and Hispanic communities were played off against each other...you heard stories about the folks who lived on the south side. Sure folks on the South side heard stories about the blacks on the North side

And CSA Colonel's Uniform (very tattered and fragile) but they were my dad's great grandfather's.

So a black woman "owns" two family heirlooms but the man who held/wore them used to tease his black great grandchildren when they were being brats/stupid that they were acting like Confederates.

Aha - that's why my dad used to tell us to stop acting like Republicans and threatening to drop us off at the White House to live with Reagan if we didn't stop acting stupid.

I would never fly that flag. The man it belonged to was ashamed of how he treated his adopted country (Irish immigrant). Shameful.

1. I saw a black man wearing a shirt with a huge rebel flag back when I was in high school... But he was homeless, mentally ill and probably didn't have any better choices from the clothing bin...

2. Outside of the airport in Atlanta in 1996 I ran into a bunch of cartoonish Japanese tourists (cameras around the neck and everything) in town for the Olympics... Naturally, all 20 of them were wearing "THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN" confederate caps from some cheesy gift shop or gas station...
