Some of them go under that flimsy lie called "Southern Heritage." Others wear uniforms, carry assault rifles and call themselves "militias." Still others carry Nazi flags and give a "Seig heil" salute to .. whoever. And then there are a bunch of other mindless people who think their white skin and their version of Jesus makes them superior.
In a way, the occupant of the White House has done us a favor. Institutionalized racism and/or fanatical "Christianity" have come out of the shadows. They've shown us who they are. They've chanted what they stand for. They've displayed their lack of decency and humanity.
This isn't the first moment in American history that these people have crawled out of their sewers and told us who and what they are. But perhaps it can be (one of) the last.
In previous eras when they took off their hoods, flew their flags and displayed their weapons to this degree, cable TV and the internet weren't there to put it all out there for everyone to see.
It will be interesting in the days, weeks, months and years ahead to see if this is truly a turning point. Will the vast majority of Americans turn against the racism, bigotry and hatred that is now out in the open?
Perhaps. We'll see.

(65,393 posts)with forcing people all over the country to acknowledge and recoil from the treatment of black people in the South. That had a lot to do with making possible the Civil Rights Act, just as film from Vietnam and film of police, National Guardsmen, and hardhats attacking war protesters had a lot to do with turning Americans against that war.
Similarly, video of cops abusing and killing unarmed PoC has forced complacent white people to face the reality of police brutality and lack of accountability, as well as how PoC are treated by a systematically racist legal system.
Being exposed to film or video of the ugly truth does tend to force at least some people to confront an uncomfortable reality they have avoided facing.

(15,041 posts)where fire hoses and dogs were turned on black protesters, are "must sees" for any American who has never seen them.
That was the 1960s and there was no "Southern Heritage" bullshit. It was open brutality by white bigots against black people who were trying to assert their rights. And it was scenes like that which brought about the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts.
Can't wait to see if there are similar results regarding the current uprising of "deplorables."
