Missouri Democrat apologizes to Trump for assassination comment

Missouri state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal speaks on the Senate floor in Jefferson City, Mo., in 2014. (Jeff Roberson/AP)

By Jim Suhr August 20 at 7:16 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Missouri lawmaker who drew bipartisan outrage over her brief Facebook comment expressing hope that President Trump would be assassinated apologized publicly Sunday to Trump and his family, calling the post “a mistake.”

But Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, a black Democrat, said she has no plans to resign as numerous top Republicans and Democrats in Missouri have insisted since Thursday’s post in which she wrote, “I hope Trump is assassinated!” Gov. Eric Greitens and Lt. Gov. Mike Parson, both Republicans, said Friday that state senators should oust her.

“I made a mistake, and I’m owning up to it. And I’m not ever going to make a mistake like that again. I have learned my lesson. My judge and my jury is my Lord, Jesus Christ,” Chappelle-Nadal, who later deleted the post from her personal Facebook page, told reporters at a church in Ferguson.

With all the insults to POC emanating from the WH and Breitbart now, again, THAT'S beyond the pale.

Especially with the class and distinction of the man who led this country for 8 years before this clown slithered his way into 1600.

The comments were Not stupid either. Trumps comments since entering 1600, now those HAVE been stupid, ignorant, racist, bigoted and just plain representations of systemic white racism and longing for white KKK_Nazi supremacy in this country. Fuck trump...

Even with all that Trump is doing, when you hope that someone is killed, if that person is the sitting US president, no matter how big an ass he is, that is not acceptable.

She could have said many other things like, "I am hoping that he ends up being perp walked out of the White House" or "That man is the worst threat to America in the last 50 years, and he needs to be out of office. Something like that, but wishing assassination on someone, especially when you are an elected official, is not okay.

whether someone like you disagrees or prefers to stay in their bubble of safety that has always been the fall back of those who lack the empathy it would take to end racism. Trump is a POS and so are those around him. I repeat, even with a horror like pence in the wings, I would rejoice if the idiot-potus POS dropped dead tomorrow for any reason....and I give a shit less who is represented in this thread race wise, I just know I give a fuck less about that potus POS voted in by racists and the people of the new confederacy and defended and whitesplained as normal by those same.

Anger at this POS called potus is normal whether you like it or agree with it. No one has asked you your opinion about AA anger, particularly mine. So I DO NOT CARE about whether you agree with the person who is the subject of this thread......I saw not much of this so called offense here when a man of substance, POTUS and family man like Barack Hussein Obama ran this country while being called every derogatory name a white person could dredge up from the toilets they called minds......fuck trump. back atcha...

But calling for the assassination of a public figure is indeed beyond what should be acceptable.

I didn't like it when Republicans (including Trump) started calling for "second amendment solutions for dealing with Democratic opponents, and I dislike the same sort of irresponsible rhetoric coming from Democrats.

Besides which, it gives GOP apologists the chance to say "both sides do it."

But if you endeavor to be a statesman, then you have a responsibility to the rule of law. You owe this to your constituency.

Assassination is against the law. Eye for an eye is war. If we don't require statesmen to act accordingly, then it is not long before the street battles escalate.

If we don't shut down this kind of rhetoric from elected officials on our side, then we aren't being responsible as citizens.

trump and his minions want us angry. They want us to pull the trigger.

"Eye for an eye" Okay...tell that to Trayvon Martin et al....your "responsibility" leaves much room for improvement especially in the area of race relations, white privilege and entitlement and the ability to sit in a safe place, whiteness, and call out people who do not adhere to your Caucasian norms of acceptable levels of African-american anger at racism and murder. I do not care to be lectured on your anger acceptability levels. Just don't care. Meaningless to me..

She just handed any opponent in the next election a golden issue to campaign against her on.

So, even if for no other reason, she has done critical damage to her ability to be re-elected and as such should resign and allow a more electable person to replace her, or at a minimum announce she won't run again. Otherwise she is placing control of that particular seat at much greater Leila of flipping hands than it needs to be.

The overall good should come before her personal interests here.

If a Republican had said the exact same thing about President Obama, we would all be calling for their resignation, Secret Service investigation, and indictment on Federal charges of threatening the POTUS.

Trump is a Nazi-sympathizer, racist, and general POS, but she should still resign. If she stays in office, I'd lay money on the Republican beating her next election. She should gracefully step down, and do her atonement and other good works in the private sector.

That is not the point. You don't just act in a moral and ethical way because you expect others to do it. You do it because you don't want to contribute to the crap that is going on. You do your part to make it a better world regardless of what others do.

It is good that she apologized. It shows that she is at least a big enough person to recognize the mistake.

I don't see anyone on here lying. We all want bad things to happen to bad people. I want Trump humiliated. I don't want him to die, I want him to suffer, after due process. I want him in a cell, thinking about what got him there. Or, because I know he would likely not consider his role. I would be satisfied with him just sitting in a cell for a few years. Socially, I would be happy if people stopped using or buying any Trump product and he suffered economic ruin because of his disgusting behavior and views. The thing is that we don't have to debase ourselves like Republicans do by wishing for someone to be killed.
