(8,994 posts)Their point would have been perfectly logical without that kind of unnecessarily offensive cover.
Oh and I'm NOT a Mormon.

(101,322 posts)The Mormons accept the bit of the gospels about overturning the tables of the money-lenders in the Temple, don't they? Isn't any criticism of a Christian sect for excessive wealth a fair point, asking it to return to its roots?

(8,994 posts)If we did that to Muslims the thread would get bombarded because we pretty much know that not all of Islam is full of terrorists. I do business with liberal Mormons.

(101,322 posts)Here's the mall:
On the morning of its grand opening, thousands of shoppers thronged downtown Salt Lake, eager to elbow their way into the stores. The national anthem played, and Henry B. Eyring, one of Monsons top counselors, told the crowds, Everything that we see around us is evidence of the long-standing commitment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Salt Lake City. When it came time to cut the malls flouncy pink ribbon, Monson, flanked by Utah dignitaries, cheered, One, two, threelets go shopping!
The theme park:
And if Romney or another rich Mormon finds they face a capital gains tax bill? Well, give it away to their church, which doesn't have to pay the tax, and carries on such charitable activities as, uh, building malls and theme parks:

The point is: they're not making fun of the faith. There's nothing on that cover about the faith; it's about the business deals of the incredibly rich church, and its sweet tax position, and how incongruous it is for a religion.

(23,664 posts)Then their faith can't be very strong. If they really believe the mumbo jumbo, they won't be upset because a magazine prints a misleading article.
Personally I think it's a scam, but then I feel pretty much the same about all organized religion.

(49,212 posts)That gullible people are still buying into his obvious con long after he died doesn't change the objective and undeniable fact that he was a lifelong con artist. He just figured out that religion had a better profit margin and lower conviction rate than horse theft and dowsing, and it let him get busy with married women to boot.

Every American owes it to themselves to learn about these two chaps, the most important Mormons of all time. Wikipedia has good articles on both.

Very little of the money goes to charity as a percentage.

(37,451 posts)A pyramid scheme is a fraudulent system of making money which requires an endless stream of recruits for success. Recruits (a) give money to recruiters and (b) enlist fresh recruits to give them money.

(49,212 posts)I was under the impression that the whole point of being a missionary was to interact with non-members of one's religion, but these folks were out in the middle of nowhere building a hunting preserve? They didn't recruit anybody, or build something with a religious or charitable purpose, they just built up a new church business. I'm not sure how that's being a missionary at all, and I'm really not sure using their unpaid labor for an obviously non-religious purpose was in any way legal.
