Hurricane Harvey Shuts Down Corpus Christi, Texas Coast; Towns Could Become 'Essentially Islands,' Official Says

Grocery stores began to close late Friday morning and residents in Corpus Christi and along the southern Texas coast were warned that they were nearly out of time to prepare for Hurricane Harvey.

Meanwhile, officials issued stern final warnings to people who planned to stick around and ride out the hurricane. According to the Associated Press, Nueces County deputy emergency management coordinator Melissa Munguia said many towns in the region could be turned into "essentially islands" as they're cut off by expected flooding.

"This is going to be a storm for the ages," said Carl Parker, storm specialist for The Weather Channel.

Roads leading out of Texas's eighth-largest city were clogged Thursday night with evacuees who weren't sticking around to experience the storm firsthand, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
