I have family arriving shortly from the Texas gulf coast to hunker down here and wait it out. They all had headed to another family members house in Houston, but have since decided everyone should head to the farthest family home inland. Which is me.
Oddly, when I was just at HEB gathering supplies for my guests there were massive lines even here. They were giving out wine samples to the people waiting so long.

(1,990 posts)It was a heck of a ride. The eye was really strange. The quiet is so odd after experiencing 120 mph winds. Seagulls and birds were stuck in the center and moving along with the eye. It got worse when the winds shifted after the eyed passed. The eye experience was about an hour. I built my house like a tank and followed coastal code (stud spacing, lag bolt specs, hurricane rafter ties). It really paid off. I live on a ranch and some of my neighbors down the road did not fare so well. I will not stay if the next hurricane has the potential of being higher than Cat 3. We lucked out that it was so slow and it died down. We are only 45 miles from Rockport. They are devastated.

I grew up in George West and still remember Hurricane Celia from when I was five years old. The wind kept blowing water into the rent house where we lived and we were in the hurricane eye for about a half-hour. The next morning when we awoke we saw that the garage that was made of sheet metal had blown away. Meanwhile, a 40 foot live oak tree in our front yard was uprooted, but fell away from the house.

I am lucky.
Now I am going to look at Lake I-10.

This will be the 4th it has flooded.

(19,567 posts)Their cellular is really bad so I'm having trouble reaching them and getting multiple of the same text from them right now.
I'm kicking my ass for not even thinking to reach out to them before now.

(15,224 posts)I'm so sorry. There's been a lot to think about so don't beat yourself up. Are they safe for now?

(19,567 posts)It happened when they did the release on Lake Conroe earlier apparently? At least that's the best I've been able to glean with their messed up cell service.
The important thing is they're all 4 safe. Things can be replaced, lives can't.

(15,224 posts)Those water releases have wreaked havoc. Many people were caught off guard. It's misery upon more misery.

They're all fine too! Safe with family in Dallas by now I hope.

(20,255 posts)Y'all are in this family's intense thoughts and prayers.🕯
Sunday morning our assembly of the sisters and brothers offered up collective prayers for Texas and especially those who would find themselves in dire straits.
My heart aches.
We have an acrylic by a Houston artist friend depicting the park across the water from Houston Medical Center. I look upon it every day and sob.

(25,551 posts)Fortunately she is renting, but it still sucks.
She lost her husband a few years ago and decided to sell her home.
She has to go back to work on Tuesday, but will have to take a cab because there are no rental cars available in Houston.
We lost both of our parents over the last several years.
I feel bad for her.

(15,224 posts)It's not over yet in Houston. I feel so badly for all affected by the disaster.
Sounds like your entire family has been through a lot in recent times. It gets hard when it all piles up. My prayers for all of you for courage and strength. I know you will pull together and take care of one another. That's the greatest gift there is. Keep me posted.
