ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - It feels like an act of hate. That is what owners of a popular LBGT bar, The Aut Bar in Ann Arbor, have to say about what someone did to their business early Friday morning.
When workers left around 2:45 in the morning, everything was fine. When one of the owners arrived at six to prepare for the day, he found the business had been vandalized.
All of the streamers were ripped down and the light bulbs were smashed. Fascia board was damaged where they were attached, and the rainbow flag had been torn down, described Keith Orr, who owns the business with his husband Martin Contreras.
They say the damage doesnt hurt as much as the message.
Someone went out of their way to make a statement if you will, said Contreras.

(14,811 posts)When I was there. First place in the country to decriminalize pot back in the 70's. That said, there were a lot of "frat boys" there and the little towns in the surrounding area were pretty red. So this saddens me but I'm not really shocked.

(6,279 posts)Unless they've relocated since I last lived there the aut bar is in a part of town largely off the radar for the "frat boys." If it were their work it was not likely the result of a spontaneous drunken rampage following the closing of the bars they frequent; it would have had to be highly premeditated. More importantly, it's August - most of them haven't returned to school yet.
Of course, while A2 itself is pretty liberal, drive a few miles in the right direction and you're in Trump country. And there are plenty of fundamentalist Christians around as well, even in town.
