What Joe Manchin Can Teach the Democrats

The Atlantic has an interesting article on Joe Manchin discussing whether his brand of centrism can help the Democratic Party win in red states and rural areas. I am biased in that I like Manchin and think we could use more politicians like him but I wanted to post this article for discussion.

and we don't put bills on the floor.

We are doomed to let the right set the agenda and put us further behind the 8 ball if we only except "Our Revolution" type Dems.

got us in the position we are in today.. Wishy/washy politics... playing to the other side.

On the surface? might seem good policy but.. It only prevents long term progressive goals..
Especially in this Trump era.

5. He is also the kind of Democrat who could win in West Virginia.

They're a rare breed. His vote, though, counts, and that's what's important, really.

I can't imagine a strong progressive Democrat who could win in WV. Truly I can't. I'll settle for Manchin from that state, in preference to some Republican.

He wouldn't have a prayer, though, in my state. In WV, though, he's likely the best the party can do.

7. I would love to hear what other Dem could win in a state Trump won by 40.

And I would love to see what kind of map produces a Democratic Senate majority without a West Virginia win, plus Democratic senators in many other deep Trump states.

He’ll vote the wrong way to protect his fucking job.

With Trump? This is the time to attack Repubs.. Trump is a gift to our hopes.

be great for this country compared to the Oklahoma right wing nutjobs taking up all of those seats right now. Oklahoma independents and republicans are not going to vote for Maxine Waters, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, or Elizabeth Warren, but they have and would vote for a bunch of Joe Manchins.

Its just simply politics. 10 more Joe Manchin's in the Senate instead of 10 more Susan Collins or Lindsey Grahams would be a good thing.

Me.

Helps him first and foremost, just as his daughter's brand of pharmaceuticals helped her.

12. Winning is everything

But you folks are acting like Manchin is a sure win and that may not be correct.

Remember that in the blood bath that was the 2010 mid terms so-called Blue Dog incumbents got beat at 4-5 times the rate of "liberal" incumbents. In that election, Joe wasn't the incumbent and got to run on his record as an environment hating, labor hating governor.

Now he has to run as an Obama-supporting Democrat incumbent in a state where Secretary Clinton who he backed hard from the word "go," lost by 40.

Do we need to at least consider changing the message and the messenger in a state where we have the opportunity to run on Trump's broken promise to bring back coal?

Here's an idea, let's ask the people of West Virginia to decide instead of making that decision at the national level?
