Instead, they will fly to someplace "safe" in the area, per CNN just now. Wish the folks forced to wade through polluted flood water, carrying small children and pets, had that option.

(115,836 posts)Have you ever been to Houston? It's not only heavily populated, it's very spread out. There's no way to evacuate that many people in the midst of that kind of flooding - people would have been stuck in their cars, and probably drowned in them (as happened during a previous hurricane). There were no really good options, but it was not a mistake to order an evacuation.

(16,124 posts)from what I've read, they had no idea the storm would stick in one place for that long.
The people running the city made the best call they could with the information they had at the time.
Either way, people would criticize.

I am guessing Melania was more or less pressed into doing this gig. They probably had to promise her no nasty water and that they'd get in and out quickly before her hair fell. It might seem a bit unfair to dump on her but she has stayed with tRump even after she found out what an awful man he is. I am guessing he has her under tremendous pressure to stay put and be the dutiful wife, but it is clear from her sulking face, she is miserable at times. In truth, she knew what she was getting when she married that asshole. It's amazing what some people will do for money. Sacrificing your soul does seem a bit much.

(5,813 posts)to withhold whatever money she manages to get in her settlement. tRump always silences his women with monetary punishment long before the I Dos are exchanged. So she won't even get the satisfaction of exposing his private ugliness as only a tRump wife would know. I still have a hard time working up a lot of sympathy for her though because she was well aware of who and what he is long before she married him.

(115,836 posts)But I get your point. You want a president to offer assurances and comfort like Obama did, and all Trump will do is show up for a photo-op and talk about himself and how Texas voted for him and what a great job "his" team is doing. He'll be wearing a baggy suit and one of his ridiculous 6-foot-long red ties held together with scotch tape, and one of his stupid red hats to keep his bizarre hair from blowing around in the wind. Melanoma will be wearing Manolo Blahnik shoes with 6" heels and some weird but expensive outfit intended to make her look as busty as possible per hubby's demands, and she'll look all pouty and angry. They will not go out in the rain or hobnob with hoi polloi, except that a few selected supporters might be allowed to approach them to offer their gratitude.
