Thank you for demonstrating, in the midst of the most horrific of circumstances, who Americans really are and what our citizens really stand for.
Our country is NOT about marching through streets chanting Nazi slogans it IS about neighbours wading through flooded streets to assist those who need help.
Our country is NOT about carrying torches while spewing white supremacist rhetoric it IS about people carrying flashlights in the dead of night, calling out to find those who need to be rescued.
Our country is NOT about plowing a car into a crowd of peaceful protesters it IS about navigating a boat through ever-rising waters in order to save absolute strangers.
The stories of the acts of heroism coming out of Houston are too many to cite here. No one is asking about anyones race; no one is being refused help based on their religious beliefs. No one is being left behind because they are gay or trans, or because they are Democrats or Republicans. No one is being abandoned on the basis of their immigration status.
Our thoughts and prayers are with ALL of our brothers and sisters in Texas. We hope for the best, as you valiantly face one of the worst situations imaginable.
But please know you have won the gratitude of a nation by demonstrating without question or hesitation who we really ARE as Americans. Thank you for confirming that real Americans will not be dissuaded from their true values and principles when it comes to the safety and well-being of their fellow men, women and children.
Thank you not only for all you are doing, but for what your efforts represent. You are not only saving lives - you are renewing our faith in each other.

(35,337 posts)Texans and what great people they were pulling together and helping each other. That was fine but they insinuated that there were
other places where people didn't help each other but instead looted and whined about nobody helping them. I wonder who they were
referring to with that charge.

I simply cobbled together the words that reflect what SO MANY of us are thinking and saying.
After the darkness of Charlottesville, Texas is shining a truly brilliant light on our country AS IT IS and not as some want it to be, or are trying to make it become.

Great post Nance! Makes me proud to be an American and a human. Sorry for the overtures about President Obama and Trump, but it is true. Obama is about Love and decency. Trump is about Trump and how he can take advantage of others.

(27,814 posts)... that many of those same Texans are risking their own safety in order to save the lives of everyone they can - and they're not the least bit concerned with who voted for who.

Seriously, the president, governor, and 2 senators' badly bungling of this crisis should help wake people up to the need for government services and infrastructure. A lot of immigrants will be involved in rebuilding people's homes and businesses.

(37,748 posts)What specifically leads you to believe anyone on DU would forget that Texans collectively voted for a GOP government?
Further, what is the specific relevance of that in regards to a simple and positive sentiment for flood victims?

Houston has demonstrated for days now that there are indeed angels among us. We happen to have Beelzebub in the White House at the moment, but, fortunately, many many angels much closer by.

(14,491 posts)I would not wish this disaster on anyone on earth, but sometimes we humans need a good shaking (I'm remembering my mama) to remind us we're all in this thing together and it's time to get back to the good basics of life.
In some way, as each of us are able, I hope we can send some love to those suffering in Texas and Louisiana tonight.

(113,306 posts)I keep thinking about how it shows that most people really are hardwired to be community, to help each other.
I wish I could understand what happened to the others to make them so hateful and ugly and insular.

(12,448 posts)It's a shame that it takes a crisis to remind us that people are, as a species, basically good. We tend to lose sight of that in the quagmire of political, religious, and just individual differences.
Our ethics, morality, and altruistic instincts pre-date, by millions of years, the current religions practiced today. It's true that people sometimes do terrible things, but in an emergency we forget our differences and just pitch in to help.
Thanks for reminding us, Nance.

Americans are truly a decent lot who will help any stranger in dire need.

(15,220 posts)Appreciate the kind words. I'm seeing fellow Texans reach out in ways I've never dreamed. It is humbling and it is reassuring. We've certainly got our share of assholes. Especially the politicians!! Who would dispute that!!! LOL But right now, the only "race" down here is the HUMAN race.
