Mike Pence is on a media blitz to insist the Trump administration will fund Hurricane Harvey relief. But fully funded disaster relief wasn't something he supported when he was in Congress.

Mike Pence is on a self-serving blitz of radio appearances this week, touting the Trump administrations response to Hurricane Harvey. That includes promises to have federal funds ready to go for relief something he cruelly opposed when he was in Congress.
Pence had the nerve, during his several radio interviews Monday, to repeatedly refer to his time in Congress as proof he understands the importance of passing legislation to provide for disaster relief.
...........................................
But when thousands of citizens affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 needed Pences help, he had other priorities. He was instead focused on bludgeoning those citizens by attaching his extremist political ideology to disaster relief bills, holding up vital support that was urgently needed.
Pence said that funding for Katrina relief should be paid for with cuts to Social Security and Medicare, ideas that the right has championed for decades, even though they have proved to be unpopular and destructive again and again.
Justifying his cruelty, Pence told reporters at the time that Katrina relief and the rebuilding of devastated areas like New Orleans just had to wait, because it is not acceptable to take a catastrophe of nature and turn it into a catastrophe of debt......................

(82,849 posts)Disasters happen. They've happened since the dawn of mankind. That's partly why we banded together in societies, to ameliorate the impact of a disaster on any individual. Pence's insistence that disaster relief be offset by cuts to the poorest and most vulnerable, hardly squares with that Christian faith he wears like a shed snake skin. Disaster relief should be a regular and well-funded portion of our national budget, because disasters will always happen. And, instead of depending on Social Security and Medicare dependent citizens to fund it, why don't we raise taxes on those best able to afford it, and who coincidentally have the most to lose in a disaster (financially speaking)?
I'll take "Questions Mike Pence Would Like to Avoid Answering" for $600, Alex.

(9,426 posts)Think about it. Devastating illness can ruin lives and bank accounts. We should all band together for UNIVERSAL healthcare. I want to know WHY politicians get to decide what their own healthcare will be like, while screwing others out of even minimal coverage? Do they think themselves and their families are worth more than the rest of us??

(58,656 posts)in fact, that's the one thing that Repubs really mean when they say that "government should operate more like a business."
One very important thing they want to make sure of is that government is truly heartless. Remember the old line from the movies, usually blabbed by one of the bad guys just before they shot somebody in the head? "It's not personal, it's just business."
Yep, all you people suffering out there, it's not personal, it's just "business" as usual. Harvey is not a disaster, it's an opportunity for business.

(24,324 posts)Maybe I should take notes, print out a cheat sheet and have the refutations, lies, hypocracies(cant spell that) and such ready to go.
On the other hand, I VERY RARELY have any discourse with 'these people.'
One guy on our HOA BOARD had a trumper sticker on his shiny, polished black Silverado during the 'campaign.' I reallay let him have it in a meeting months ago.
Some of old ladies on the board were shocked, shocked I tell you at my outburst, to say nothing of the language I used.
PS. I'm an old guy so I can call the old biddies old ladies, thank you. Plus I am the only OLD guy on the board.

(23,099 posts)Funny how it's always Repugs who don't want to approve federal money for disasters, except when they control everything and now want to pretend (wink, wink) that they care. They don't give a fuck about anything for the working class unless they think it strongly affects their ability to be re-elected.

(14,574 posts)The Koch brothers want unrestrained capitalism, and the only government expenditures they will support are those that funnel our tax dollars into corporate profits. Otherwise, as Grover Norquist, one of their many puppets, says, "Shrink government to the point where you can drown it in a bathtub."

(5,275 posts)This jerk is a top line Bible Thumper but not so much into love thy neighbor. And he apparently believes that the Universe has only been here for a few thousand years, which is provably false, so he is delusional too.
And if Drumpf is kicked out this bozo will be President.
We need to take back the Senate and pick up as many House seats as we can. And win back more Statehouses and State legislators.
We need to take back this Nation from the evil crazy train.
