Republican Shill Schieffer 'Shocked' Romney Outed Him as Supporter in New Ad

July 15, 2012 | 1:05 p.m.

A new ad out from Mitt Romney's campaign that uses comments made by journalists has drawn fire from one of the people used in the ad.

The ad, titled "Hope and Change?," aims to shame President Obama for running a uniquely negative campaign, in contrast to the more optimistic campaign he ran in 2008. It includes clips of Bob Schieffer, the host of CBS's Face the Nation; David Brooks, a conservative columnist at The New York Times; and and Time Magazine's Mark Halperin, all of them talking about the negative aspects of Obama's campaign strategy.

"Whatever happened to hope and change? Now it seems he's just coming right out of the box with these old fashioned negative ads," says Schieffer in a heavily-edited clip that makes it appear as though he was making a statement, when in reality he was asking Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod a question.

Schieffer sounded off on the ad on his show on Sunday, saying he was "shocked" by it and acknowledging that it puts him in a difficult spot as a journalist to appear in a political ad.

"I have no affiliation with the Romney campaign," he said on Face the Nation. "This was done without our permission."

His expression of "shock" is pandering poutrage bullshit.

"Journalism" on CBS died with Walter Cronkite and Schieffer wasn't it, was never going to be it, and never will be it.

That wasn't a question he asked Axelrod. It was a statement that followed up on a question and I'm sure it reflects his true feelings.

about being used as part of a campaign spot without his permission. Taking part of his question to Axelrod out of context isn't like quoting from a newspaper editorial.

Bad form for the Romney campaign- don't be surprised if Scheiffer isn't so damn nice to them from now on.

He makes right-wing-friendly comments like the one Romney used in his advert as leading questions to his guests with more than just a little innuendo behind them. He goes even further to defend republicans and attack Democrats in his individual commentaries. He may well believe he's seen as guileless -- and more than a handful of his viewers buy into his seemingly reluctant slams on Democrats and the credibility he tries to provide to conservative arguments in the direction of his interviews -- but, he's as transparent as a Rove or a Gillespie because he's now a known quantity to most folks who bother to sit through his pablum and propaganda anymore.

anymore so if he's come out of the closet as wingnut friendly, then I missed it.

I have quit watching MSM news since about 2004, only catching things here and there. I watched Keith religiously from day one, then Rachel, Ed, Lawrence, The Rev, MHP and UP. Also, Daily and Colbert. I won't watch any of the other shows--I get too angry.
