I've been trying to verify this news story for the last hour and I can't.... but
My local Boston TV station says that Domino's is going to send their drivers out w/ darkened windows and a trunk that can be opened from the driver's seat... so that the customer can take their food from the trunk and avoid interacting w/ the driver and hence avoid the tip.
Now I have no idea what Domino's pays its drivers on an hourly basis.
What I do know is that we have an economy where instead of talking to a customer service agent you have to press "1" for this and
"9" for that.
How about you talk to a human being and you pay for that. Those people make money... and then they spend money.
If someone brings you food, you tip them for it. You'd do it in a restaurant. It should be no different at home.

(38,558 posts)but yes, I do.
I make less than minimum per hour. I rely on tips. I often make more in tips than I do w/ my hourly wage.
Take away the customer interaction.... I'm sunk.
Provide the customer w/ good service, friendly interaction... you get a good tip.
When Domino's does this, they get their money. Their drivers get the shaft.

(38,558 posts)is no cash transactions. Pay by debit or credit and tip the same way.
If the driver carries no cash, there is little incentive for robbery, or worse.

(6,205 posts)"Starting Wednesday, some pizzas in Domino's (DPZ) hometown of Ann Arbor will arrive in a Ford Fusion outfitted with radars and a camera that is used for autonomous testing. A Ford engineer will be at the wheel, but the front windows have been blacked out so customers won't interact with the driver.
Instead, people will have to come out of their homes and type a four-digit code into a keypad mounted on the car. That will open the rear window and let customers retrieve their order from a heated compartment. The compartment can carry up to four pizzas and five sides, Domino's Pizza says."
I did a search on Yahoo using the title.

Yup! Pizza in the tree tops. Inedible pizza at that. Watch for falling driverless cars.

(4,919 posts)I once delivered pizza to a house in a torrential rainstorm and did not receive a tip. As I walked backed to my car, the customer yelled, "Hey, Dude! You forgot your tip!" I walked back to customer and he said, "Here's a tip: Don't deliver pizzas in the rain."
I'm happy to see Texans taking care of each other today.

this is extending EXTRA effort to go above and beyond the call of duty in being shitty to someone else, merely for its own sake.

(50,557 posts)As for the tip...restaurants in Germany work the tip into the price of each item. Nothing says Dominos couldn't do that here.

(12,654 posts)Open the door, hand over the money for the food, and go back to whatever they're doing.
If they had actually secure whatever they're doing to (i.e., put on clothes, actually settle the kids down, turn things off, put away the joint, and/or put tools/projects away so critters or kids don't disturb them) and get out of their house/apartment/garage to go out to the street to pick up the pizza, most would just go ahead and do carry-out instead.

(20,190 posts)I thought the whole point was that they brought it to your door.
In any case you can usually add a tip if you order online and pay with a credit card. I prefer to tip the driver with cash though.

PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,857 posts)takes only his own pizza order?
That's the first problem.
Another one would be that at least sometimes a person who's ordering food delivery may have mobility issues and may not be able to walk out to the vehicle.
My son used to do pizza delivery. What the driver is paid up front is highly dependent on the state and local minimum wage laws.
radius777
(3,635 posts)imo, all pizza/food delivery (whether to the front door or to the curb) should only occur via credit/debit transactions so they are not anonymous and the company/authorities can take action if food workers/drivers are assaulted.
also the driver/car should have cameras.
having a system like this would prevent most of these issues.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,857 posts)the time and witnessed lots of bad driving.
I still don't see how you'd prevent a customer from grabbing more than one order, if several are stacked in the trunk of the car. And even a camera inside the trunk wouldn't help much.

(14,565 posts)It's supposed to be "a hint of provolone." Right. I tried it once and threw up 5 times.
Never again.
Previously I was a fairly regular customer of Domino's, especially during my 25 years in Las Vegas.
I despise cheese in general but can take mozzarella only on pizzas. Once they add other types of cheeses I'm gone.

(11,686 posts)Jobs, jobs, jobs. I have also noticed that a lot of places do not give you a chance to put in a tip when you pay with a debit or credit card. I can not carry cash all the time just for tips and it frustrates me.
MissMillie
(38,558 posts)the driver gives you a slip to sign... and there is a "gratuity" line on that slip. Add your tip there.
And if that isn't happening, when you call in your order, tell the employee on the other end of the phone that this is what you would like to do.
Doreen
(11,686 posts)They are some of the few you can still tip. Looks like that might change.

(25,183 posts)like a drug deal. However, I have as much sympathy for those who will eat what Domino's calls "pizza" as I do for anyone who signs up to take a Carnival cruise.
Support your local mom-and-pop pizza joint, if you're lucky enough to still have one in your town.

(19,813 posts)I lost my taste for pizza and can't eat most meats.
MissMillie
(38,558 posts)my problem is the bread. Moist meat works well for me.
For me, sugar kills me. If I eat fatty meats and they sit well w/ me, then so be it.
For the record, I had my surgery in 2004. I lost 150 lbs. (which got me to "normal" , and I'm only 10 lbs over that.
I think that the best things to avoid are big portions and sugar.
But I also think you have to decide that for yourself
You've been given a tool. Use it to your best advantage.

(81,488 posts)To get their pizzas, customers will have to enter a number on the touchpad, then a back window will lower, revealing the pizza. Over the next five weeks, randomly selected customers around Ann Arbor, Michigan, will be offered the option of getting their pizza delivered by the hi-tech "driverless" car. ...

(50,557 posts)They want to see if driverless cars can be used in pizza delivery service, so they got Ford to make up a handful of Fusions with darkened windows, a keypad on the back to open the trunk, and a heated compartment to keep the food warm. The cars are covered with sensors and cameras. A Ford engineer will be driving each one...and, no doubt, thinking his $500,000 automotive engineering doctorate meant he wasn't going to have to deliver pizzas anymore. A big thing they want to know: are people really going to walk outside in the rain to take food out the back of a car?

Does the customer want their chef salad delivered in a heated trunk? How about the 2 liter bottle of soda?
