A federal judge in Manhattan on Tuesday dismissed Sarah Palin's defamation lawsuit against the New York Times. The New York Times celebrated the decision.
"Judge Rakoff's opinion is an important reminder of the country's deep commitment to a free press and the important role that journalism plays in our democracy," a Times spokesperson said in a statement. "We regret the errors we made in the editorial. But we were pleased to see that the court acknowledged the importance of the prompt correction we made once we learned of the mistakes. In the words of the court, 'if political journalism is to achieve its constitutionally endorsed role of challenging the powerful, legal redress by a public figure must be limited' to cases where there is something more than an honest mistake."
Palin sued the newspaper earlier this summer over an editorial that drew a link between an advertisement from Palin's political action committee and a 2011 shooting in Tucson, Arizona, in which six people were killed and then-Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was severely wounded.

(82,849 posts)I think we all know that calling them "deplorable" just makes them prouder of themselves. Nationalist? White Supremacist? Darn tootin' they are! But for some reason, calling these bigots racist just bugs the hell out of them. Somehow, getting called racist bothers them where other descriptives fail.
Now, it appears that if you point out their stochastic terrorism, that bothers them, too. Sure, Sarah Palin could put "surveyor marks" (wink, wink) over Giffords' Arizona district, but that doesn't mean she wanted any deranged lunatics out there to think she was granting permission to go shoot up a bunch of people. Heaven forbid! And just because the President has called the media the enemy of the people, and led his demented supporters in hateful chants against reporters, please don't think that any nutjob who acts on this was in any way goaded into it by the President. Because that would make the Nazis feel sad.

Sadly, a judge has thrown out Sarah Palin's defamation suit against the New York Times after Palin spent months learning how to pronounce the word defamation.
