(63,228 posts)Regrettably, I was slow to get the terminology right myself, and I know that I used the term "transgendered" when I didn't know better. Never out of malice, but out of dumb ignorance.
Then a woman I know explained it very simply: "You wouldn't say a gayed man or a a lesbianed woman, would you?"
And that was the end of it!
I am grateful for the people patient enough to help me grow.

(164 posts)I served as a transgender woman in the 1970s and 80s. I went through attenpts ro out me then punish me. I took one Article 15 to a special court martial and won. This has been a stressful and angering experience watching Trump callously use thousands of lives as so much red meat to throw ar his base for brownie points. I hate that bastard

(25,906 posts)I have no clue how many people are actually transgender, but it seems as if a rather high number of military personnel are.
That must say something very interesting about transgender people. The military life isn't a particularly easy one, and there's a high degree of conformity expected, which is why I've been so amazed to see how many current and former military are stepping forward and publicly acknowledging being trans.

(13,200 posts)Who is considered "fit for service" has expanded over the decades, but as soon as a new category is included, Regulations are updated to reflect that inclusiveness. The services actually do attempt to execute the directions they receive - and as an all volunteer force the leadership is loathe to ban any category of people who are "fit to serve"
It is not perfect, for example, the regulations mandating segregation were struck down in 1947, but in the field, most units weren't fully integrated until the mid to late 50s.
There wasn't a corps of black officer or NCO leadership in place right away, that took years to develop, and racists (even today) push back.
There were race riots on Minot AFB North Dakota in the early 70s, for example.
But in the last 60 years an institutional memory of what it took to break through those obstacles has been promulgated throughout the force. It took less than a minute for the supposedly conservative leadership in all branches of the military to shrug and collectively say "Whatever" when gays were allowed to serve openly.
Same with Transgendered people - it turned out to be a non event.
But for the false brave, self serving anti-patriots who populate the GOP, kicking those who are different has become their only policy.

(6,324 posts)When you make a new policy based on medical readiness and deployability- what this will be based on- it takes them time to deal with the people already in after they make the decision to bar new enlistments.
They still won't retain most in, based on the issues revolving around the need for hormone therapy and how that can't be supported in a wartime deployed environment. What they will do is end up discharging most of them on medical grounds via the same process used if someone develops another medical condition that is not compatible with the demands of military service. A few that don't require and special hormone therapy, hormone monitoring or mental health care will probably be allowed to finish enlistenents or make a few last years to retirement but then won't be allowed to reenlist.
It's not unlike how they manage a lot of other things. When services have changed tatoo policies they barred new enlistees whose tattoos didn't meet the new rules but let people in whose tattoos didn't meet the rules stay but did not allow them to reenlist. I saw the Army deal with the same thing as Sleep Apnea and doctors prescribing CPAPs became more common, first you couldn't enlist if you needed a CPAP and then they started going case by case and either discharging, retiring or placing a bar to reenlistment on people who were prescribed a CPAP.

(5,586 posts)Mattis is not disobeying Trump. He's not "creatively interpreting" Trump's order to let transgender people serve. He's straight up doing what Trump told him to do.
