Christie on appointing himself to replace Menendez: 'I don't see that happening'

By KATIE JENNINGS 08/29/2017 05:52 PM EDT

Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday he probably wouldn’t appoint himself to the U.S. Senate if Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez were to resign following his federal corruption trial.

“I don’t see that happening,” Christie told FOX News host Neil Cavuto. “I really do believe that some of us are built for executive positions and some of us are built for legislative positions. I think I’m much more of an executive branch kind of guy.”

Christie has previously expressed, in more colorful terms, his disdain for serving in the U.S. Congress. In 2015, he said he would “rather jump off the Brooklyn Bridge” than serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Menendez, New Jersey's senior senator, goes on trial Sept. 6 in Newark.
