SEN. DIANE FEINSTEIN seems to think we're STUCK WITH TRUMP for 3 MORE YEARS!

Sen. Dianne Feinstein booed at San Francisco event after saying she hopes Trump can change
August 30, 2017
.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein was booed by some constituents Tuesday night when she said President Donald Trump could be a good president if he changed his approach to the job and brought the nation together.

“I just hope he has the ability to learn and change — and if he can he can be a good president,” she said at a Commonwealth Club forum at the historic Herbst Theater, surprising San Franciscans used to hearing their politicians decry Trump. “Oh, come on!” a few people shouted. “No, no!” screamed others.

(snip)

Unlike some of her California congressional colleagues — who have called for Trump to be removed from office and even questioned his mental sanity — Feinstein threw cold water on attempts to impeach Trump or otherwise kick him out of the White House before his term is up in January 2021.

“Look, this man is going to be president, most likely for the rest of this term,” she said. “I think we have to have some patience — it’s eight months into the tenure of the presidency.”

When a Senate member who serves on two commissions (Senate and Judiciary) currently INVESTIGATING Trump says something like this, we're obviously fucked.

...only one president has left office due to anything other than death before his term ended.

We can't proceed with the business of the country and the government on some speculative assumption that he won't be president until 2021.

My only beef with what she said is that he still has a chance to be a good POTUS.

No, he doens't.

He is who he is, a grotesque ogre.

She could have said the truth, he isn't going anywhere through at least the end of 2019 (IF the Dems were to win Both chambers in 2018 and have grounds to impeach it would take that long).

Then said, we just have to find a way to fight and hold on to have a chance to reset congress in 2018.

and they do not want impeachment (which we already knew). This is why the people are going to have to pressure the GOP like we did during the ACA repeal only push for up impeachment much, much bigger and stronger as well as boycotts. If Mueller finds him guilty of a ton of crimes and the GOP does nothing, the people will have to hold our reps accountable. Several people have said on the various news shows that this will probably be how it turns out.

Even if we don't take control of Congress it's more practical that we can replace enough of the rethugs to have an impact on voting. At least then, if it happens, our voices will matter.

and pardons everybody in the White House, including himself, the GOP would still not act on it. Sure, we'd get a bunch of them issuing strongly worded tweets or issuing tough statements, but only a few of them will actually try to take action.

In 2018, I do think the Democrats have a chance to win back the House because of Trump's unpopularity. That said, the senate map is almost impossible barring a tidal wave of epic proportions. With the House back, hearings would almost immediately start on violations of the emoluments clause violations, Russian collusion, trump foundation scandals, etc, etc and then impeachment becomes a real possibility.

the chance of getting the senate in 2018 is about the same as getting a flush.

the chance of getting the house is 2018 is better, but still only about the same as getting a set.

Not do I support even her tepid support for the current White House occasional occupant, I have to credit her statement as being accurate.

I've said since the election he will be there most likely for the rest of this term. That is simple reality.

Maybe she has found out that the evidence directly against Trump isn't as solid as we thought so she's trying to make the best of an awful situation.

I was afraid that trumps cronies may go down but Trump's dirty fingerprints would remain hidden.

coming out of the James Comey briefing w/ Chuck Grassly and the look of shock and resignation on her face. I have a feeling that there is more to this than meets the eye.

Not sure what it's about, but I think it looks pretty ominous. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in that room. There is definitely something underhanded going on here.

Maybe Feinstein is sounding like she will stop opposing Trump in order to get him to let down his defenses.
She wants him to think the Intelligence Committee may not have enough evidence to bring him down.

I don't know how this would play out but it's just a thought.

You too would be skeptical of doing something even remotely beneficial for the country over their party.

This is the party that chose to obstruct a President tasked with pulling our country from the brink of financial ruin.

They're not worth shit.

Trump would have to nuke Texas for them to even think about impeaching him.

It is easy to over analyze what politicians say. I am not a fan of Senator Feinstein. I think that she is way too comfortable with surveillance and wielding state power. That said, she is trying to be optimistic, which I don't agree with at all. Change is possible, it is. If it were not possible, what hope would we have as a species?

That said, I tend to look at, not what is possible (it is possible Trump get struck by lightning, or a meteor, or is swallowed up by a sinkhole). I look at what is probable. He will not likely change. He will not likely learn. I think that his capacity for self examination (which is vital for learning and change) is severely lacking. He also has little incentive to change relative to his needs and desires. He is insulated by his enablers and has a tightly knit group of supporters. He has shown the tendency toward self delusion and grandiosity, which also bodes poorly for changing and leaning.

So, yes it is possible that he could change and learn, but it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY, which is why Mueller needs to be supported in continuing his job, and why the Democratic Party needs to continue to fight viciously to take back the Congress. If we can get back the House even, we could push impeachment, even if the Senate is not as likely to convict and remove, Trump will then have to limp through 2 years hung around the neck of the GOP, or he will resign in disgrace.

That should be the focus and that is why I think it was good that Feinstein was booed. She needs to do her job and keep fighting for the average person and not be so willing to capitulate to power.
