Joss Whedon: “We’re creating a country of serfs.”

(Joss Whedon is the guy behind the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and FIREFLY TV shows, the Firefly movie SERENITY and, of course, writer and director of THE AVENGERS)

Comic-Con 2012: Joss Whedon: America Is Turning Into ‘Tsarist Russia’

“We are watching capitalism destroy itself right now,” he told the audience. He added that America is “turning into Tsarist Russia” and that “we’re creating a country of serfs.”

Socialism remains a taboo word in American politics, as Republicans congressmen raise the specter of the Cold War. They refer to many Obama administration initatives as socialist, and the same goes for most laws that advocate increasing spending on social welfare programs. They also refer to the President as a socialist, though this and many of their other claims misuse the term.

This evidently frustrates Whedon, who traces this development to Ronald Reagan – the nominal hero of the modern conservative movement. Since then, Whedon believes the country has changed in way that has made it too difficult for regular people to succeed.
...
“We have people trying to create structures and preserve the structures that will help the middle and working class, and people calling them socialists,” Whedon said. “It’s not Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal […] it’s some people with some sense of dignity and people who have gone off the reservation.” Guess he's not a Tea Party fan.

Sometimes we can gauge best by our gut reaction to an "event". The first time I saw that video from UCDavis, I cried like I did over Kent State. There was NO action to induce that response from the boys with the badges. In America this event should NEVER have happened, not with the basis of this government. It was an act you would see in a POW camp during a declared war...not on the UCDavis campus. Literally I jumped up and ran to a friends house, sceaming "Tell me I'm not witnessing the fall of America".

We are already "serf" status, we the 99%. That was clear long ago.

I don't know how much has to be taken away from the population before they see the light.
Their dignity? Their retirement savings? Their jobs and security of income? Their Homes?

The Elite, the Upper Crust, they really consider us blind, deaf and stupid. That we are so tangled in our personal lives, we won't care whose in charge. Of course its an insult.

BUT it is past time for all of us to get truth out.

Even if they know they're sliding backwards, they either would rather blame themselves, or increasingly, unnamed regulations and taxes that are somehow stifling the economy. And if a liberal proposes something that might actually help them, their instinct is to bite their head off. It's a weird psychosis the modern-day GOP has instilled in its own (increasingly impoverished) voters.

is what the Nazis preached to get into power. Modern day Nazicons are exactly the same.

That our political and economic system resembles nothing so much as feudal Europe.
